There is a mark on the crank gear that has to be pointing up, there is a line to line it up with.
Each cam shaft sprocket has a mark on the outer edge of it that has to be pointed up.

93 Subaru Impreza L I pulled off the timing cover and noticed that the belt was broken what are the chances that my valves are bent

The 1.8 litre (EJ18) and the 2.2 litre (EJ22) are both Non- interference engines so there is a good chance the answer is NO they are not. Check with a dealership they will be able to tell you what engine you have fitted. Comment if you need more information.

Where is the # 1 mark located on the timing belt to set

The only timing belts that I have seen with timing marks on them are for the Subaru. You need to line up the timing marks on the pulleys with the marks on the engine. Once they are lined up you just install the belt.

How to fit suburu liberty timing belt? Car is suburu liberty 94 2.2l ej20. I had to replace water pump. Can someone tell me where the timing marks are please?

Sorry i do not know off hand where the marks are but i will explain how to do it without marks ,firstly a few spots of white paint before you start makes sanse ,anyway start by slackening the camshaft retaining caps so the all the valves are closed ,take out no1 spark plug and using a nice long thing screwdriver in the plug hole locate TDC ,then look on the flywheel or the front pulley for some timing marks ,now a good clue here is that most engine have the crankshaft keyway pointing to the top of the engine --most but not all --- then move the crank back about 20? so pistons drop a bit but make sure you mark crank before dropping it back though .then look on the cam or cams if a twin cam ,and now tighten cam caps again then turn over cams till no1 cylinder has the valves closed on both inlet and exhaust with exhaust just about to open and inlet has just closed .then bring piston up to mark and fit belt --away you go brmmm brmmmm .simple isnt it .when you get the cam right look for a slot on the back of the cam or a sensor on cam lobe aligning up as this will no doubt be your timing mark ,when found white dab of paint for next time

Timing belt broke and need timing marks diagram 2.2 subaru

the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong

Timing belt timing marks, 1997 ford escort where are they?

Ford Escort/Tracer 1991-1999 Repair Guide

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L Engine

(see Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
  5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
  2. Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
  3. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
  4. Install the timing belt.
  5. Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
  6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

I hate to mention it but,a lot of cars(imports) when they jump time, they also bend valves. They call these interference engines. The piston hits the valves, when they are out of time.the car will not run unless the head is pulled and reworked. If you call NAPA auto parts, and ask for the price of a timing belt ,and then ask,is this a interference engine? and they will tell you for sure if it is in most cases.

I think the crank is not set on zero...there is a special timing mark on the fllywheel it has to be set to and it is not zero or top dead center....look for special marks on the flywheel thru the rubber inspection slot in the back which is quite a few degrees from those timing marks that show zero.If memory serves me there are two line marks onthat flywheel that is the cam tioming marks
