Car wont keep running without hold down the gas after running out of fuel

I have a 93 olds that literally ran out of fuel when I was pulled up to the pump. It wont keep running now unless I hold the gas down. What could be the issue? I had a new fuel pump put in last year if that matters.

And no. I have never ran out of gas or run it that low normallly. But I managed to drive it 10 miles back home. If the fuel pump went bad would I have been able to drive it that far?

  • wendicos May 09, 2009

Thanks guru. I will try that this a.m. After I got it home it did run for about 6 or 7 minutes without my foot on the gas pedal. Would it run even if the pump was ruined?

U have burned out the new pump, these pumps require fuel around them for cooling, so if u run the tank below 1/4 on a regular basis or run out of gas then you have ruined the pump again.

Try changing the fuel filter, running it out of gas you could have sucked up sediment from bottom of tank and pluged up the filter. After you do that and it makes no difference have a fuel pressure test done.

Chg. the filter and see if it clears up, its a cheap fix compaired to the alternative.

Fuel pump dead or dying. Injection systems need 110 psi, and a pump only doing 30psi will still not run .

I have a 2005 mitsubishi outlander. It wont start after I ran out of gas. I bought a new battery but the car still wont start

It's still out of gas until the lines are purged of air. The fuel pump has to run awhile to build up pressure. Keep cranking. If you can take the small gauge wire off the starter easily, all you have to do is turn the key to the start position and hold it there for a while. Listen for the fuel pump. When it slows down or stops then reconnect the wire and it should start.

I ran my 93 camry out of gas and put 5$ in but still wont start

Its possible you gummed up the fuel pump with the junk on the bottom of the tank. You also may have cooked the pump running it without fuel for lube and to keep it cool.
You need to know if fuel is getting past the fuel filter in the line.

My wife ran car out of gas and then ran battery dead trying to start it. Now car will turn over but wont catch and start. Any ideas what the problem is?

The fuel pump is cooled by the very fuel it pumps. Without fuel to keep it cool it can simply burn out; especially if it has been running during a lengthy attempt to restart. Pump function can be tested by loosening the Shrader (car tire type valve) valve fuel rail on the engine whilst the pump is running and seeing the fuel squirt out. If no fuel squirts then replace the pump.

I ran out of gas

The fuel pump in this car is electric and is inside the fuel tank, it uses the fuel it sets in for lubrication and for cooling, when u run out of gas this causes the tiny electric pump to severly overheat and many times it ruins the pump, and that is what has happened here, u will need to pull the gas tank and replace the fuel pump. also replace the fuel filter.

It a 2003 2.0t 93 model. It sat all winter without running. I started it after charging the battery and it ran for about 50-60 seconds, it then stalled out and it wont start again, unless it sits for...

Take the battery in and have it tested to make sure it is fully charged and is holding that charge and that all the cells are good....letting a car sit for any length of time without starting it and letting it run for a bit is bad news. Batteries will go bad. Gasoline left to sit in a car will "go bad" and can leave a coat of varnish on sensitive injectors, fuel lines, etc... Water and debris can ruin the fuel filter. Check the battery first, put some injector cleaner in the gas tank and you may also want to spray the throttle body with a recommended cleaner before trying to start again. It may also help to pull your spark plugs and clean or replace them. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Help w 1994 chevrolet truck

This injector set-up needs a specific fuel pressure supplied to the fuel rail to even start, much less run properly. The fuel pump is immersed in fuel inside the gas tank to keep it cool and not burn up. Running the fuel level low causes more heat in the pump and interuptions in proper fuel pressure. AC/Delco pumps have proven to be a reliable fix, the aftermarket pumps only last for a month or two sometimes. Check fuel pressure under the hood and power and ground to fuel pump at electrical harness at top of gas tank. This truck needs a fuel pump.
