Gearstick disengaged from gearbox

The gearstick appears to have disengaged from gearbox. Have had no problems with it, there was no noise or grinding etc prior. SHifted down to 4th gear, and when I went to shift back to 3rd, the gearstick was loose, and could not change gears.

SOURCE: 4l60e slips in 3rd and 4th

There are to many things that can cause this problem, best thing to is go get the ECM scanned for DTC codes at a transmission shop or Auto zone or Parts Source since they scan for free.
The ECM should have DTC code in it's memory on how the transmission is Performing and have the Transmission line tested for Fluid pressure.
Good luck and hope this helps. Oh and also ways check with more then on transmission shop if there tell you that you need a new Transmission,
It could be a simple as the transmission filter falling off causing the lost of transmission fluid pressure. Check the transmission fluid too.

1417 mercedes benz not engaging gears

With the engine running and the clutch pressed all the way down try each gear in turn and listen. Do you get any crunching or grinding noises? Nasty noises on gear changes with the clutch fully pressed is commonly a sign of a badly worn clutch. No noises suggests linkage problems or an issue inside the transmission itself.
On a manual transmission you start at the gear stick and work down to the actual transmission. First check the links on the gearstick under the floor. Then follow those cables down to the transmission and check the linkages at that end. Sometimes a worn or loose linkage bush can cause loss of gears. Next check the arms and levers on the outside of the transmission itself. Work it by hand feeling and listening for it "Clunking" as it drops into all the gears. If it doesnt feel solid and 'notchy' the issue could be inside the transmission itself. You'll need a gearbox specialist to look at it for that issue.

I can shift into any gear but only first is engaged.

One of the gearstick joints has disconnected - hopefully not actually inside the gearbox. Gearstick connects to gearbox via a few rods & joints or a pair of cables in sheaths. Check something visibly moves near the gearbox no matter what movement the gearstick makes.

1998 volkswagen jetta won't go into gear

Sounds like the clutch cable or spring has gone, but seeing as it went gradually probably the spring. It basically means that the clutch plate isn't lifting from against the big end, the grinding noise being the fact that you're forcing the car in to gear when the input shaft is still spinning. If you don't know how to take the gearbox off yourself then take it to a dealer, the way to get it to drive for now would have to be to start the car in first, or have someone bump it, the carefully work your way in to third by matching the gears before pushing the gearstick in. This is quite difficult and can do damage to your gearbox so be careful if you do this, otherwise get it towed.

My car is stuck in first gear. I think i got something that hit underneath and the gear handle is stuck.

you could first of all try looking under your gearbox where the arm attaches from your gearstick... this seems unlikley but if sumthing hit up under you it may have gotten lodged or bent somthing... I dunno... personally i really really doubt it, a more likeley scenario is that somthing has gone wrong inside the gearbox or just around your gear stick.... If it was me and I'm no mechanic so i dunno if theres an easy way to test, but I'd be taking off that control arm from under the gearbox and just tryin to change gear by hand... If this works then you know ur gearbox may be in with a little luck and the solution may be simple ;) well best of luck from this noob ... anyhows if you get really pissed off like me you could always just apply excessive force to your gearstick in the hope of unlodging somthing :P or breaking if farther.. best of luck.... by the way, what happened exactley when it got stuck... were you just driving along and then all of a sudden you heard a kinda smashing / grinding noise :P if so I'd be looking at your gearbox, just check ur throwout bearing is in good nic cuz i seen a car in the wreckers and all that was wrong was the throwout,... $20 later it was back on the road...
