Severe lack of power 1991 Geo Storm,

Just Fixed the timing belt on my 1991 Geo Storm, now it has a really bad lack of power.. Also stalls when it comes to an idle, but not all the time. Theres a light flashing on the dash and it is giving me the number 12 for a diagnostics code. If anybody has any ideas please let me know?

The timing is perfect, I made sure of that already (3 times) and there was a wire hanging off the coil... There was also one connected at the same spot the was plugged into a little insert on the mount for the shift cable.. Could that be my problem? If so where does it plug in?

  • 3073716646 May 06, 2009

Thats definitely a possibility, it is a wire not a hose.. I just don't see where it would have plugged into though.. If you have an e-mail I could send you a picture..

okay I found the spot where that plugs in and it didn't fix the problem.. Any other suggestions?

When you say "fixed", do you mean that you put the new belt on it?
If so, you probably missed a tooth in the belt placement. This usually happens when you wrap the wrong way during the procedure and the marks don't end up lining up.
Also check for other things like pinched wires or something disconnected that didn't get put back in the right spot. (vacuum lines?)

"There was also one connected at the same spot the was plugged into a little insert on the mount for the shift cable.."
Is that a wire or a hose? I don't have one here to look at right now, so I apologize for ignorance.
Could there be a double electrical clip that fell off somewhere so two wires can go to the same place? How about a ground clip that the wire might have plugged into?

Lack of power could be several things.
It could be the engine computer is messed up, the ignition timing, fuel delivery (low pressure or computer issue or sensor issue), or compression (valves bent from timing belt failure?).
Does it run smooth or rough? Does it start easily or does it really
have to crank for a long time and then just barely come to life?

Not knowing everything about your car's history, it might be best if you can get a diagnosis from someone who is there to look at it, rather than via long distance. It might be something as simple as the ignition module in the distributor or another broken wire connection, or it could be that the valves are all bent just a little. Most common things are whatever you worked on last, then electronic ignition, then fuel delivery, then compression check (last because by then we are in denial).

Timing marks on 1.6 dual over head cam

the geo storm, 1.6 DOHC
the FSM cover it, so does alldata.com
hint 2, its an Isuzu engine.
its really (makes information easier to find )
Isuzu:
4XE1-UW a DOHC 16-valve engine with 130 hp (97 kW)
he DOHC engine was used in the 1990-1991 Isuzu Impulse XS, in the 1990-1991 Isuzu Stylus XS, in the 1990-1991 Geo Storm GSi, and the M100 Lotus Elan.
all that off the wiki,,
all cars rare here.....

1st google hit
http://www.robietherobot.com/storm/torquespecs.htm

This engine is interference type
so when timed, with a new belt
roll engine by hand, with spark plugs out.? do pistons hit valves.
yes, stop, the cam is timed wrong.
no, do a compression test on #1, if pass, do all 4. 150psi min.w.o.t.
wide open throttle
a better test, is a leak down test. x4. by hand.
these acts of kindness to the engine, saves most engines.

if the leak down fails, the timing is wrong, or the valves are already
bent..
dont use a fleabay china belt, bet a GATES belt. (they last)
setting the tension is very important to a full life .

When my timing belt broke on my 92 geo storm all of my coolant spilled out underneath the car. why would this happen?

busted head, timing belt left valves open while pistons continued
up into valves and bent valves result busted head.

I have a 92 geo storm and it jerks really bad when im driving it it stalls at lights and i can smell fuel really bad

It sounds like a fuel leak from a failed hose. You should take it too a shop before it catches fire.

Driving car and car stalls while running

Haynes manual shows this for that problem, but please take it with a grain of salt and dash of peper:

1. Idle speed incorrect
2. Fuel filter clogged or water and impurities in fuel system
3. Distributor components damp or damaged
4. Faulty emissions system component (talk about vague :)
5. Faulty or incorrectly gapped spark plugs
6. Faulyt spark plug wires
7. Vacuum leak in intake manifold or vacuum hoses
8. Valve clearances incorrectly set

That last one is possible IF the new timing chain/belt was installed a tooth off.

All info is from a Geo Metro/Sprint Manual, but it may help.

How to set the timeing on 91 geo storm

The timing marks are located near the top of the crankshaft pulley on the plastic timing belt cover. There is a notch in the pulley to mark TDC (Top Dead Center)
Align the notch with the 0 mark on the plastic cover to set your base timing.
Ground the proper circuit on the ALDL connecter located under the dashboard somewhere under the steering wheel. Check the manual for the proper circuit to ground.
With the engine warm and the circuit grounded. Set the proper timing. Un-ground the circuit and you are done.
