Need a walkthrough on replacing bad starter

if you have the north star motor it on drivers side tward front grill, you will find a belt cover you need to remove an you'll need a special tool most auto parts stores will rent it to you for a small fee ,it likes a large socket ,if you have the new one you'll see how it fits in socket, using a rachet with socket place over water pump and turn a 1/2 turn to left and it's out ,replace in reverse ,take care not to disturb new o ring seal ,and don't use silicone to seal it , BUT general motors strongly suggest you do use some type of motor sealant , now for the bad news =these motors are very bad with over heating issues that have plaged the north star for years , if you drain antifreeze make sure you use air purge valves to remove any air from motor (purge valve looks like a brake bleeder screw ) or it will continue to over heat, im guessing that's why your doing this , if over heating is a problem take the time to go over all aspects of the cooling system =belts, flushing motor, cooling fans working correctly ,coolant filled, well I REALLhope this helps you ,good luck with it .

If its the northstar engine the starter is under the intake manifold.

Disconnect battery, unhook wires on starter, remove two bolts holding starter to block.

This could be a few things that I know of. The rear air shocks compressor could be the problem. If the car was on a car lift with the wheels not flat on a ramp (like hanging) and the compressor was not shut off it can burn up the compressor for the ride sensing etc will try to level the ride but can't. or the thing just went bad. or maybe you have a bad fuse. or you developed a leak in the air bag inside the shock. or the air suppling tubes are loose or bad cracked??? but here is a start good luck mine are out and its costly to have fixed!!!!!! I'm looking to just put on a plain pair of air shocks and by passing the ride sensing etc..... due to cost. IDK but good luck!!

It's the sensor. GM had a bad supplier from 2000 til early '03. Replace them both, unless you just want to practice for the next time. They are above the oil filter adapter which need to be removed. It's still a tight fit. Get some new oil filter adapter O rings to remount it.

To replace the starter the intake manifold must be removed. This takes a skilled mechanic.

well some people like where it is and some don't! i do on my 1997!, i assume u have a 4.6 engine? if u do the starter is under the intake manifold,on a 4.9 engine it is under the car on the left side facing the car, these can be a paine.,go to your local auto supply store and pick up a auto repair manual for your car,by Haynes,good book to own. the 4.6 starter is not that bad to tackle,hope we helped and good luck to u.

can you still open it through the key? does the pull down motor not work at all? if the pull down still works it sounds like the popper has just gone weak/bad . they need to be replaced after so long. seeing as you should have a keyfob and a button in the car. im assuming that means its the solenoid switch for the trunk release which is a 30 dollar part.
