2002 Kia Sedona new battery & alternator car dies while driving

This last weekend the battery light/brake light came on while driving a 4 hour trip in hot weather. Suddenly the car lost all power and died in traffic. It started again with jump but when turned off would not start again without jump. Took it to auto parts store to check for codes. Only codes indicated gas cap issue. Checked alternator with fresh battery & only putting out 10-11 amps. Bought new alternator & had it replaced by a shop. Went right back to auto parts store, replaced the loaner battery with my charged battery & it still wouldn't hold a charge. Battery light/brake light came back on. Car would not start again after turned off. Bought a brand new battery. Lights stayed off for about 20 mins drive time then came back on. Tried to drive home, 4 hours, and made it only 2 before car died on highway. Battery would not start the car again until it was charged by a highway patrol car for over 30 mins. Then it would only move enough to go a few feet to the shoulder.

Help??? Not sure if the alternator was bad that was put in?? It was checked before I left the shop & it was putting out 14-15 amps. The new battery was definitely heavier than the one I removed drained before I started out on my return trip.

My 2002 Kia sedona van was going down highway , it made a grinding sound , motor died , now starter just clicks, motor won't turn over : whats could be the problem ?

Starter clicking, not enough power to turn motor over. Check the battery, make sure charge is full. If it is, your starter is shot, replace it

I have a 2006 kia sedona. the problem is that my battery suddenly died so i stared the moter with a jumper. when the engine started the ABS,BREAK,ESC lights came on. After the moter ran for an hour i...

It sounds like your alternator is bad. Here is how to find out:

Start your car (jump it if necessary)

Let it run - while it is still running - disconnect the battery cables from the battery.

If your car suddenly dies, most likely its the alternator.

If your car does not die after disconnecting the battery cables - then its probably a bad battery and your alternator is working fine.

Brake and battery light don't turn off.

1. Your battery is not charging appropriately (the alternator has gone bad)

2. Top up your brake oil or have your brake system checked.

But be sure to take the car for diagnostic scan too.

My 2002 Kia Sedona is acting up

you could have a problem with the alternator, you will need a multimeter to test the battery then the battery with the engine running. HID lights ABS will not work at below 10 volts. the alternator may be charging but not at its full power, battery should be 12.05 volts fully charged and with alternator should make the voltage at the battery with engine running, should be at 14 volts. I don't think the radio would be the problem unless it has been wired wrong but that should not be the case if used original wiring. but if the alternator and battery is good then i would check the radio, it could be sorting out somewhere if not fitted correctly or has a fault.

2002 kia sedona van

Hi,

There has been known issues with the alternator on several year/versions of this car. If memory serves me right, there was a TSB for the alternator either over or undercharging. The TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) specifies replacing the alternator and re-flashing the PCM.(Powertrain Control Mudule).

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
