Question about 2001 Cadillac Sts

Car will not downshift upon acceleration..."kickdown"

Is a 96 Cadillac STS, 59K 4.6L Northstar. When I give it gas to pass a car it revs up but I slow down. Any ideas? Thanks.

    It's funny, It did it again today, but I turned vehicle off while driving, restarted it (neutral) then it worked just fine. Tranny fluid is topped off, and doesn't slip. Thanks.

    Thanks for the information given. I believe however, I found the the culprit. Partially clogged fuel filter. If you think about, in my original post, I mentioned it wouldn't downshift. It makes sense now, it wasn't getting enough fuel for the downshift. Being it was only partially clogged, it still was able to pass through enough fuel to idle just fine. I bought a new filter today threw it under there, and seems to have more power, much more at higher rpm's. The only other thing that has me a bit concerned now, is that the filter was replaced only a few months ago (previous owner). Now it looks like I may have to drop the tank and clean it out. Does this seem like logical reasoning for the problem addressed? Thanks again for you replies. Mike.

    When you gun floor it, it will drow down a gear. Or like up a hill, it drops a gear. Apparently before, it wasn't getting enough fuel to drop a gear, sometimes, but enough to keep a steady idle.

    Okay, okay......Not always, but some times while driving it starts to slow down, I give it gas and nothing...not even a rev. I slow back down then gradually get back up to speed. If I punch it, it will only bog down. Is there some sensor that will do this?

    No solution yet. The problem doesn't happen all too often. I am not sure if it is the catlytic converter, being it only happens sometimes. Haven't given up yet. Maybe a TPS? I don't know, next time it happens I am going to disconnect the throttle position sensor, if it stops, solvlem probbed. Thanks for the follow up.

    Does it feel like the transmission is slipping? You checked tranny oil?

Most affordable possible solution is to give it a transmission tune-up. Transmission number one problem is neglect. Change the oil, filter and pan gasket. You'll probably need to take the pan off, very messy job. Take the pan off, carefully scrape all old gasket material, clean the pan with dish washing soap, dry it completely, put a bottle of Lucas for transmission in the pan. Put some Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound on the pan gasket surface. Set the gasket on the pan, keep the gasket on the pan for three minutes then install. Don't put any Shellac on the transmission gasket surface nor on the gasket. Follow recommended directions for filling the transmission with oil.

    You want to fix it? Give it a tune-up the filter is clogged. When completely clogged it will no longer shift at all, you'll be stock where ever this happens!

    I don't think you have engine problems since you mentioned the engine revs up. The problem to me is from the flywheel back, whether electrical or mechanical. What ever you want to do with the information I've given you is entirely up to you.

    Wow, it sounds totally irrelevant to me. I think that when a car downshifts is when decelerating, under load or going uphill. When the car revs up it needs to up-shift or go to the next higher gear bringing the revs down. Like when you gun it, it'll rev up then drop when it shifts to the next gear and you gain more speed. I'm just trying to understand you and whats going on with your car. But if you feel you on the right track go ahead and do what you got to do.

    Before getting into the sensor thing, I think you have a clogged catalytic converter or other exhaust obstruction. Look into this and let me know what you find.

    I don't think is a good idea to disconnect it the computer needs the information or signal from it to adjust the air to fuel ratio. Plus the transmission uses it also. But you could be right about it. Find out how to properly test it. Or just go to the junk yard and grab one then swap them. You will have to mark the replacement before taking it off so that when you put it on you car it'll be exactly the same. You'll have to restart your car's computer for it to adjust to the TPS.

My 99 jimmy with a 4L60E, on a downshift (kickdown) at highway speed or any speed really when downshift by pressing down the accelarator or downshifting by hand the tansmission feels like it's in neutral,...


First off there may be nothing wrong. At highway speed, the trans will shift down to 1st, but you won't feel it. If should feel like neutral. Does it shift normally when your "wide open throttle" from standstill? If it shifts properly in this situation, then your fine, don't worry. How about wide open throttle at say 25mph? how about 35 and 45? anything over that and its gonna feel like neutral. IF your convinced that your passing gear is not working right, it could mean that its out of adjustment, and needs a little more push, more throw, or kinda like adjusting the rod out a little bit further. Adjust your "passing gear linkage" or kickdown as you imply. Second guess would be low on transmisison fluid, filter, and last, the transmissoin control selonoid. Again I suggest its doing just fine, if it shifts down at any speed.

Protege automatic transmission wont downshift to pass


Isn't the kickdown vacuum operated on older cars? If so, would poor engine vacuum or leak therein cause the tranny not to downshift?

I have a 95 Cadillac sts northstar v8. When I start it up it accelerates on its own. It gives itself gas without ne pressing the peddle. Check engine lights goes on and off. Could you help me out?


this could be a few different things it could be something with your electronic choke or it could be a vacuum problem most likely a vacum problem

Cable on top of engine broke on throttle what does it do


Replace the cable with one from your local auto parts store or dealer.
It may be for cruise control if your cruise control no longer works.
Or, it may be for the accelerator pedal.

neither the 93 seville is just that it's the 4.9 liter before the northstar sts 4.6 came out in same year

geo trackers all have the problem of after 3/4ths down on the gas pedal it slows down and if you gas it its supposed to down shift if its automatic because it means it revs higher for you to go faster
