Had to replace a thermostat on my Mazda 3, 2.0L, 2007 which required me to remove the drive belt. Upon reinstalling the belt (original) was to long for the tensioner to work. I did not miss any pullies as the drive belt only goes around the crankshaft, waterpump (smoothpart), alternator, and tensioner. Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

SOURCE: fan belt replacement

Hey there tsukaska,

No problem.

  • Get a 14mm or 9/16" socket and a long handled ratchet or breaker bar.
  • Get the belt around all the pulleys except the A/C compressor or Alternator.
  • The tensioner pulley is near the Alternator toward the center of the engine. It's on a spring loaded arm. Get your socket on the center nut of this pulley.
  • Slowly pull the ratchet toward the center of the engine. The pulley will pivot on the arm allowing you to get the belt on the final pulley.
  • Slowly release the tension.
  • You're done

Dumb question, but, did you happen to the diagram on the underside of the hood, the strut tower towards sides of the motor or on the radiator support.

Why does my mazda 6 squeaks in hot weather

The usual reason is the belt that drives the A/C compressor is loose. Sometimes the issue is a tensioner pulley bearing is worn out. May also be the belt that drives the alternator. When the extra load of the compressor or the current to drive the A/C fans engages, the belt will slip and squeak. Adjust or replace the belt(s).

Can't you just unplug the ac unit and keep the same belt? that would save you from having to change the original belt. which will make it a lot easier then trying to re-invent the wheel.

Where do I locate and how do I replace thermostat

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5929960-s_thermostat .

The thermostat is on the front of the engine by the drive belt. Sorry I do not have a picture, but the thermostat is inside a housing that is held on by 2 or 3 bolts and has a heater hose connected to it.

  1. Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
  2. For 2.5L engines, remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  3. Disconnect the heater hose and position out of the way.
  4. Remove the thermostat housing.
  5. Remove the three bolts and separate the water outlet adapter from the thermostat housing.
NOTE The thermostat is indexed and must be installed correctly.
  6. Remove the thermostat and the O-ring seal.
NOTE Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Torque all fasteners to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
