Rough running engine at temp

Hello, I have a 2000 nissan xterra that has been running great! The other day while driving with everything running normal and no warning the engine started to run really rough and the check engine light came on (first time at 140k!). I pulled in to a parking lot and took the truck out of gear and let it idle. It would idle fine for a few seconds and then bog down over and over. I let it run for a few minutes like that to observe the symptoms and then cut the engine. After waiting a few minutes I tried to start the engine, it would turn over and try to start but would not start. I walked to the local burger stand to ask if there was a mechanic or auto parts store near by and there was so I walked there. I talked with them for a few minutes and they said that they could run a code check but I would have to get the vehicle over to them. The engine had a little while to cool (approx 45 min) and started with no problem so I proceeded to drive the 3/4 mile to the store and just as I pulled into the parking lot the engine started running rough again. Codes were P0340 and P0325. Same thing the following days, it would run for about 5 miles (guessing till operating temp?) and then start running rough. Hope this is not too much/little info....

0340 is camshaft position sensor and the other 0325 is the knock sensor. Chances are you need to replace the sensors and good to go.

I suggest that you start by going to AutoZone and getting a free diagnostic scan. A scan is the only way to realistically pinpoint problems in post 1983 vehicles.

jason, im gonna bet the farm that you have a clogged catalytic converter, if you can get the vehicle to your nearest muffler shop most of them will test the converter for free. they simply drill a small hole in the exhaust pipe in front of and behind the converter and compare the pressure to see if its clogged, call ahead to see if they will test it for free, most will, hope this helps

My 2000 nissan xterra wont keep idle and it sputters when sitting. when i am driving it hesitates like it wants to shut off

try disconnecting the MAF (mass airflow sensor) - it is located after the air filter, usually a black box in the intake tube. Could also be the IAC valve which monitors the engine temp, that can be disconnected but will cause high idle if removed, dont know where it is on your car though.

If the MAF is faulty, disconnecting it will make the car idle and run again, but will generate a CEL (check engine lamp) on the dash just because the MAF is not seen by the ecu, but it will run on a default map till you get another one fitted.

9 times out of 10 it is nothing. My engine light stays on. If it really bothers you then you can take it to any oil change place and there is a sequence that they do.`
