When drive at 35 mph and above I have heat, but when I slow down in traffic or stop at a light the heat goes to cold. I put some more anti-freeze in and it improved a little. Changed the radiator cap because I saw some slash marks on the hoses near the radiator cap. What else could be the problem?
Double check your cooling system. Make sure it's topped up and that all the pipes leading from the radiator heat up during normal use, if not, you need a new thermostat.
These could have several problems here partly stuck open thermostat restricted heater hoses, plugged heater core, air in heater cor, heater control valve. suggest run car just above and idle until it is warm touch radiator hoses with garden gloves on they should feel pressurized and hot both of them, now locate hoses that go thru the firewall and they also should feel the same if not check at heater control valve hot on both sides and cold coming out of firewall restricted heater core.

Heres a couple of things you can check. Start your car and remove the radiator cap,(before it gets hot mind you) when it reaches norm operating temp, look inside radiator to see if water is circulating. If its not moving, its a bad water pump. Also, youre hoses should never collapse, if they collapse when they get hot maybe you need new hoses? Finally, if those dont work, flush out your radiator. Open the bottom cockpit and use a garden hose and let it flush out the system while the car is running, about 10 mins should do the trick. If the radiator looks clean inside then it doesnt need flushed.
