My 87 ford Turbo Coupe has a difficult time going into 3rd all other gears are fine

As I drive the accelerate shifting is fine most of the time into 3rd gear but the down shift it is hard to get in all the time. Have to go over to second as if I am going to do it then back over to third and sometimes it will go into it. What could be the issue?
