My shifter didn't quite line up with the gear it was in. While trying to fix it, I broke the cable. How difficult is it to replace the shifter cable?

SOURCE: Shifter cable broke in 1998 chevy suburban

Ok, Disconnect it from the Tranny First. This will make it easier to Fish Through. Connect the New Cable on the Tranny. Follow where the Old one Goes with the New one, Removing the Old one as you go. It will enter the Cab and work it's way up to the Sterring Column. You will Need to remove the Dash Panel to Access the Cable on the Shifter, It just Pulls Loose. You are at the Hardest Part of this at this Point. Let me know if you cannot access the Shifter From this Point. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

Kind of a pain in the neck - especially if you are not real inclined..

You have to take apart portions of the console to get at the cable where it connects to the shifter.. And disconnect the old cable at the shifter and at the trani linkage under-neath..

Not a real fun job..

Have a great day !

Ok, here is what you do, slide under vehicle, locate shift lever on side of transmission rotate counter-clockwise two clicks, pop shifter on, hop back inside turn key on depress brake pedal and check shifter, if it falls off again replace cable assembly they do not sell individual bushings, and get cable from dealer.

If the shifter moves but does not feel like it is trying to put car in gear the cable that goes from the shifter to the transmition could have broke or came loose. If that happened while driving the gears may have tried to shift when tension was released from the cable.

What happen the grommet at the end of the shifter cable broke, this grommet is not sold by it's self, it is sold with the cable as one and a dealer item only, what you can try is remove the cover over the shifter and with a short piece of vacum hose and a tie down or hose clamp, you can put it in there in the place of the grommet, this is just a short fix, cable will have to be replace.
