Disconnect the negative battery cable first. Better to be safe in case something arcs.

SOURCE: Where is the knock sensor located on a 2.5 Subaru outback 1998?

directly below the throttle body on the drivers side of the engine block. Has a white connector attached to a single black wire lead. I had to remove the black plastic piece that connects to the throttle body and the air filter housing, in order to see/get at it. Easy fix once you find it. Haynes manual shows it in a different location, so don't confuse yourself looking at the diagram.

If it is backfireing, then it is in the timeing ,your timeing belt may need to be replaced. How many miles does it have on it ?

Where is the knock sensor located on a 2001 subaru forester engine 4 cyl. Replaced wires and plugs ...runs great but sensor does not reset and comes right back on after code is erased. are they a one shot...

When facing the engine it is in the rear right hand side.

The knock sensor is a piezo electric crystal, when they go bad the must be replaced.
