checking fuel pressure. Fuel injected cars are very fuel pressure sensitive. Fuel pressure is very important and must be within specifications. However, if the pressure is low, it does not mean the pump is bad.
A plugged fuel filter, a pinched line, and low voltage at the pump can contribute to low fuel pressure. All three must be checked before replacing the pump.
Yes. When was the last time you had the starter changed? Has anyone crawled under the vehicle to check for a loose starter? If the starter does not engage it may be the starter solenoid ( the thing that drives the gears into contact before the starter actually turns ). This might not be ramming the gears together properly and that will cause the grinding noise, as well as an intermittent start.
the starter grinds because the bushings at each end are worn .or if the engine has been removed and replaced,, the person didnt replace the spacers from the starter and bell housing which keeps the starter gears from going too deep into the fly wheel makeing a grinding sound. the intermittent starting problem could just be the check valve on your fuel system bleeding back . need more info.
Sounds like your starter is not working, here's a link on how to remove, take to Autozone and they will test for free, takes only a few minutes. To check for power at starter, get meter and it should read 12 volts.
try shimming the starter , it sounds like it is a tiny bit to close to the flywheel and is binding, causing a tinny or metal to metal sound.
dosent sound like it needs a very thick shim .probably no more
than a thousands or two. hope this helps
It sounds like you need a new battery. If it's a 2002, then it's probably on it's second battery already and due for a new one. The clicking is the starter solenoid trying to engage the starter with the flywheel. If the battery can't supply enough "cold cranking amps" or "power", then it makes that clicking noise.
See that? Every once in a while I'm right!!! Reason is that the starter draws far more than anything else in the car. Lights and radio can easily be run by an otherwise ineffective battery, but when loaded (starter draws a bit less than 200amps), the battery will fall flat on its' face! When you jump it, the car is running off the alternator and seems to be OK, till you turn it off again.
