It is possibly the O2 sensor. I had some issues with early 90's 4.0 liters where the O2 sensor would stick rich under heavy acceleration and would cause it to lean out and bog down. It felt like a rochester four barrel flat spot on an old chevy. I hope this helps.

76 jeep cherokee 360. how many turns on the oxygen screw of the carburator? i can take off fine if i baby the gas but if i give it too much gas it boggs down and back fires.

Sounds like a problem with the accelerator pump or cruise circuit in the carb. The idle mixture screws only affect the idle circuit.
You start with 2 turns out then adjust it with an exhaust gas analyzer.

What is the speed limit for shifting into 4 high?

Yes you can, it will bogg your engine down alot, but you can shift at 30. If possible to wait until you reach 32 33 it would be a little better, but still possible.

Jeep not starting

You can do either one of two things. Leave the distributor where it is and clamp it down. Or set it up to TDC, mark the dist cap #1 on the housing, lift the distributor and turn the rotor so when it sets back in, the trailing edge (right side) of the rotor is on the left side of your mark. That is how it is base timed. I hope this helps.
