White smoke from under hood, shut down and checked oil level. shows nothing on dipsteck and apperently oil in coolent. how can oil go into coolent? blown head gasket maybe... 4 cylinder engine.
SOURCE: White smoke coming out of exhaust even when engine is warmed up.
on the 3.8 ussaualy not the head gasket but the upper intake gasket . antifreeze leaks inside intake and into the cylinder. very common. the new gaskets are much thicker.or the plastic plenum the black plastic part on top of the engine goes bad around the water inlet and need to be replaced . when i do either job itell the person to replace both at same time saves money and headaches in the near future. hopes this helps .....and cost for a shop to do this $1100 to $1500
SOURCE: blown head gasket
Look the engine over and see if you can find any external leaks, change the thermostat and make sure that fan(s) are operating.
Check the oil for water...loosing that much, it has to show up somewhere. Blown headgasket usually puts oil in coolant or coolant in oil, causes an external leak from between head and block or goes out through the tailpipe as steam.
look carefully and you will find your problem!!
SOURCE: blown head gasket how much to repair?
You may be better replacing the whole engine with a rebuilt. It's going to cost close to $1000.00 to repair and you can buy a rebuilt for just $1700.00 and you know the engine is fresh. With a blown head gasket you have the fear of antifreeze contamination in your engine oil. The antifreeze is corrosive to the crankshaft bearings and you may be looking at bearing replacement also. If the body is good, you can always try to find another 1997 cavalier with less miles and swap out the engine. Seen most cavalier around that year for sale starting at $500.00 and another $300.00 for labor to do the swap. Good luck and sorry about the bad news. Keep me posted, be glad to help.

the head gaskets are blown you can believe that anytime on any engine gas or deisel that you get oil in the radiator and there water/ antifreeze in the oil pan the gaskets and or cylinder heads are bad

I'm very sorry. I hate to say it but i believe that you are correct and that you do have a blown head gasket. Repairs for this could get a little expensive. If you can't or don't want to cut your losses, then my suggestion would be to ask around to find a good mechanic locally and get estimates from more than one place to ensure your not being ripped off. Even if your a DIY, the worst case scenario if you attempted this could be a cracked head if its been like this for a while. It is kind of hard to tell without taking it all apart. So the best thing to do is get estimates and if it doesn't seem worth it then just cut your losses and find another reliable vehicle. Sorry again for the bad news.
