1996 GMC Suburban Brake and Power Steering Failure

I found a leak just between the power steering pump and the master cylinder. the problem seems related as i lost all brakes and power steering at the same time. located the leak in between these two units, but am not sure what i need to do to fix the problem as the pump and the master cylnder are both working properly. I know i have air in the brake and power steering lines now, but will bleed them after the leak is fixed. Is there a seal in between these two units? I am trying to find a service manual but can not locate one.

Please give me some advise as to what to look at or what needs to be done to fix the leak.

Cheers

Daan

The leak is coming from in between the master cylinder and the power steering pump, not from the hoses. Yeah I lost all braking and power steering today. so what needs to be replaced? The Power Steering Pump?

  • daanmuller Apr 30, 2009

The leak is not from the hoses. It is coming from in between the master cylinder and the steering pump. I pulled the master cylinder off and it appears to be working properly, I am leaking power steering fluid not brake fluid, how ever the brakes do not work. When i push the brakes down I am pushing out power steering fluid.

    What needs to be replaced?

If you got the hydro brake boost system .check your power steering pump hoses for leaks .check master cylinder is leaking. fill power steering pump and master cylinder with fluid. the one that is the lowest that the one leaking. if your hydro boost brake unit is leaking .replace it .if power steering pump leaking. it not the hoses replace it . because if power steering goes out brakes will also go out.

What the hell does the power steering have to do with the brakes? they r two separate systems, and are in no way connected to eachother.

SOURCE: 1996 GMC Suburban Brake and Power Steering Failure

Daan,it sounds like you have hydraulic assisted brakes you should be able to trace the lines from the PS pump or steering gear box to the master cylinder,if the power steering is low on fluid refill it and have someone turn the steering wheel to one side or the other while you watch for leaks in the lines.if this helps you to locate the leak, just go to your local parts store and pick up a replacement.

I changed my front pads and rooters on my 2002 suburban and now the power steering is out?

Phil: you probably got air into the power steering fluid assist piston. Try driving your car. The air should bubble up, keep adding the correct power steering fluid.

Bleed power steering/brake unit 2002 GMC Sierra 3500

The slash that you placed between the words steering/brake have me concerned. I certainly hope you did not think that these two systems are co-joined? The power steering system is a hydraulic system completely separate and isolated from the brake system. They also use two completely different types of fluid. Putting brake fluid in the power steering system would destroy it just as putting power steering fluid in the brake master cylinder will destroy it. The type(s) of rubber used in the seals for each of these systems demands they use their own fluid. Any cross-contamination will require a complete draining, cleaning, and replacement of ALL rubber components and seals. This would include the power steering pump and rack for the power steering system, and for the brake system the master cylinder, all calipers and wheel cylinder as well as the proportioning valve. If there is an ABS unit, it will need serviced as well.

2001 Silverado 2500 HD Why Rear brakes don't work after I installed new hydro-boost power booster, master cylinder, calipers, and pads. I bled master cylinder before installing, and brakes beginn

Hello Patricia,

Have you checked the master brake cylinder reservoir for brake fluid loss?

I don't suspect the master cylinder as you have replaced it... but am more suspect of a leaking brake line or fitting which should have
been discovered when you had the system bled.

The only time I ever had a rear brake problem with a 2500 series Chevrolet was due to seized rear brake caliper guide pins...as your calipers are also new that is not your problem.

If your brake pedal feels spongy and travels to the floor board you have air in the system, a brake fluid leak or a failure in the power steering system, such as a broken hose, broken power steering pump drive belt, or failed pump, would result in a loss of pressure to both the hydro-boost and steering.

Power steering leak

Lingo is o.k., but I think you may be confusing power steering with power brakes. Power steering has no master cylinder (brakes do) and no power booster (brakes do). The power steering pump is mounted on the front of engine and run by the fan belt or the serpentine belt. The p/s hoses are 2- a pressure line and a return line, and run from the pump to the steering box or to the rack and pinion steering gear.
It just sounds like you have a brake fluid leak at the master cylinder. If it is, you need a new or rebuilt brake master cylinder.
Good luck. Post back for more.

NO POWER STEERING AND NO BRAKES WE CHANGED P/S PUMP AND THE HYDRO BOOST NOW WHAT

The brakes and the Power Steering are two different systems and two different problems. The brake problem is going to be a caliper or master cylinder issue which maybe a Vacuum issue if the Power Booster hose is leaking or disconnected from the master cylinder. The power steering is going to be low fluid in the power steering pump, faulty power steering pump (Obvious if you were hearing a whine that got louder as you turned the wheels, or the Power assist piston that connects to the tie rods.

Power steering is weak and pump is whining, also the brakes are a little mushy. Is there a booster pump that affects both of these? Fluids seem fine.

If your power steering is whining you may just be low on power sterring fluid. I would check that first. If that is good your power steering pump may be on its way out.

There is a power brake booster in your system, but that should not affect if your brakes feel "mushy". I would look at the master cylinder, you probably need a new master cylinder they have a tendency to leak fluid past the seals as they age giving your pedal a mushy feeling. I woould also check your brake lines on each wheel to see if one might be leaking, this will give you a mushy feel as well. I doubt that is the case if you aren't loosing fluid however.
