1992 Oldsmobile 88 wont crank.accessories come on and work- battery full charge- has Commander security system-want to try to hotwire to get going-tow is $125 and $75 for diagnosis- checked key at dealer for resistance OK-someone said bypass security module with purple wire from ignition but cannot find a purple wire-or cross purple to red to crank? HELP need car badly...
Assuming the passkey works. this should take about 10 minutes to do.
do you have a volt meter at all? If so check power on the small connecter on the starter. the small connecter only has power when the key is in the "start" position. If you have 12Volts or very close while in "start" then you have good power from your lock cyl.
If it drops in voltage while cranking then you have wiring problems or bad connections. If you do not have any power then the problem is within the wiring or something before ther starter. if you have power to the starter., everything is working to that point, But this doesnt mean istarter is good.
To check the starter you need to make sure its drawing amps. if you have a starter removed it can test amps only continuity cause there is no real load on it like turning an engine..(very common) you can do a very easy test by turning headlights on while in "start" position. if your lights dim slightly then your starter is working the way it should and if it dims alot or goes out, you have another issue.(bad battery, or connections, or locked up engine) to be sure make sure your connections are good on everything and check for bad battery cables and or corrosion. change as needed.
If your lights dont dim at all then most of the time the starrter is bad cause it doesnt draw ant amps, which usually is a bad motor or bad connections somewhere. I know this is long but i tried to cover all the areas at once. This goes for every car. :)
if you do not have ne tools use a screw driver to jump the starter your self. just touch the large bolt with the small one. this will show if your starter works. if it does you have problems before the starrter.
good luck,
Michael
Take the battery cables off and hold them together for 3-5 minutes, this will reset the computer and the car should return to normal.
