Change your ECTS sensor with a brass one, it's the water temp sensor you can buy it at auto zone for 8 dollars and replace it yourself, make sure you get a NEW wire plug harness for it probably about 10 or 15 bucks, it gets corroded then the computer reads the wrong engine temp then it makes the idle rough and run rich.
check for coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant. smoke is comming from somewhere, most likely burning coolant from blown head gasket. or rings are smoked and burning oil :( gunk on egr is probably burnt coolant. sorry for the bad news :(
idle is too low you see the problem with saturn sl1 is its a single cam engine that puts out only 100hp and when you get into low idling such as 800 rpms where it should be idling at when you hit the a/c the rpms drop a good 150 so turn the idle up more or is it during driving conditions?
spray some carb cleaner on the passeger side of the intake manifold, right behind the alternator. it is very common for those to leak there and cause those exact problems
I had to have the fuse box replaced in mine. Worked great for one year. Now it's acting up again. I can be driving and the car just dies. I push on the fuses and it will start right back up. Might run for a mileor two. Might go for a couple months. Still scratching my head in SE Alabama.
