The speedo and odometer both use a signal from the speed sensor in the transmission. If both have stopped working, the problem could be the sensor. If the odometer still works, the problem is inside the speedo head.
In 2.8 Pajero the speedo receive electronic signal from the VSS sensor, but if the speedo for any reason stop working, O/D will stop work because the Trans ECU needs signal from the speedometer electronics to made the gear change into O/D

it's most likely the cluster if one function works and the other doesn't. And, you likely have an electronic vehicle speed sensor that sends a signal to your analog cluster that then dispays your speed and odometer.
