1999 Audi A4 Engine Coolant Thermostat

Trying to find where and what I need to pull off to find the Thermostat....anyone have an idea of where I can find it before I take the car apart?

  • bmccann84 Apr 29, 2009

It is the 2.8L V6 Quattro. Not turbo charged, but the temp gauge works and then while driving it will go back to minimum. And then at a random time start working again. I am wanting to know where the temp thermostat is before I tear everything out since it is not an easy car to work on...please help

I completely understand. Here's where you can find the thermostat location:
2.8L V6 Engines

The thermostat is located in the engine block just to the side of the water pump underneath the housing where the upper radiator hose is attached.

  1. Remove the lower engine shield.
  2. Place a large drain pan under the vehicle to collect the coolant.
  3. Remove the radiator cap and drain the cooling system into a suitable container.
  4. Place a large drain pan under the engine block drain located at the bottom of the engine near the vicinity of the flywheel and the oil pan.
  5. Drain the engine block coolant into a suitable container.
  6. Place the (hood) lock carrier in the "service position". For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): Body And Trim, Service Position, Front Bumper, Hood Lock Carrier.
  7. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routing Maintenance And Tune-Up.
  8. If installed, remove the upper front engine cover.
  9. Remove the toothed camshaft drive belt from the right side cylinder head to allow enough access to remove the thermostat housing. Cover and protect the drive belt from residual coolant.
  10. Remove the mounting fasteners; remove the housing, then the thermostat.
WARNING: The thermostat vent valve must be installed facing up otherwise the cooling system may develop air pockets and allow the engine to overheat.
  1. Using new O-ring, install the thermostat making sure the vent valve is installed facing up.
  2. Install the thermostat housing and torque the housing the bolts to 88 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  3. Inspect the camshaft drive belt for wear and damage and replace if necessary. If contaminated with fluids or lubricants, it should be replaced. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Routine Maintenance And Tune-Up, Engine And Engine Overhaul, Timing Belt And Sprockets.
  4. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following: Top off cooling system with the recommended fluid and concentration. For additional information, please refer to the following topic(s): General Information And Maintenance, Fluids And Lubricants.
Post your email address and I'll send you a couple of exploded diagrams. Have fun.

I have a 1999 Audi A4 Avant, I keep having to top up the water reservoir, what could the problem be?

If you are talking about the reservoir for the radiator, the radiator pulls coolant in from the tank when it is low.
If you are adding coolant - water every week and there are no external leaks, the engine is burning the coolant out the exhaust pipe.
Usually a leaking head gasket - intake gasket or cracked head.

Audi a4 1.9 tdi thermostat diagramm

First time you might check the thermostat operating.

Heed of antifreeze coolant temperature!!!

The thermostat location for a 2000 Audi A4 1.9 TDI is on back of the alternator at the bottom side of the bracket.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is NOT necessary to replace the alternator if you want to change the thermostat !!!

Thermostat checking:
1. Cold engine. Start up the engine and watch of the water temp indicator. After first value 60 Celsius Degree you still warm up the engine until the lifter (pointer) reach 80 C deg. (second mark after 60 C deg.). At this time you let engine running at idle speed and check with your hand the thermostat plastic housing and hose temperature in bottom left side of the engine. Heed of alternator driving belt and ventilator fan !!!
2. If the thermostat is good the hose must be cold until the water temp indicator reach almost 90 C deg.
3. The thermostat opening temperature is 87 C deg.
4. If the hose is already warm the thermostat is out of order.

Thermostat location, Part number: 044121113, in german - "Kuehlregle" (Price around $25):

Important note: Always replace the thermostat round seal, position 7 in the above picture.

Where is the thermostat on my 2002 audi a 4 located

Hello,

The thermostat of a 2002 audi a4 is located between the engine and the radiator. The thermostat is small and crucial. It is meant for the vehicles cooling system. It moderates the flow of coolant into the engine by releasing it when the engine need it the most. The thermostat is designed to open its valve once the temperature of the engine reaches about 200 degrees F. Its purpose is to keep the engine running at a consistent temperature, allowing your Audi A4 to operate at peak performance.

If You are planning on replacing the thermostat, here are the steps to follow to replace them, try to get these instruments (Car ramps, 4-by-4 inch wood block, Metric socket wrench set, Socket extension, Pliers, Drain pan, Empty plastic container, Black marker, Towel, Emery cloth, Gasket seal) then follow the steps below:
  1. Raise the front end of your Audi A4 by driving up on a set of car ramps and placing your vehicle in park.
  2. Place a 4-by-4 inch wood block behind one of the rear tires to keep the vehicle from rolling backward.
  3. Use a socket wrench to remove the pan that covers the bottom of the engine.
  4. Locate the red plastic cap that was behind the pan that you just removed. This red cap is your radiator drain plug. Remove the radiator cap from the top of the radiator and then place a drain pan under the red drain plug and turn it with a pair of pliers to allow the coolant to drain completely from the radiator. Once the coolant has completely drained, turn the drain plug to close it off. Be careful when using the pliers on the drain plug that you do not snap the plug off.
  5. Slide under the vehicle and locate the thermostat housing that is sitting just above the oil pan drain plug. Pour the drained coolant from the drain pan into an empty plastic container and label the container so that you do not reuse the expelled coolant. Place the empty drain pan under the thermostat housing before you attempt to remove the housing to allow the coolant from the engine to drain into it.
  6. Remove the 10 mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing on the engine block with a metric socket wrench. Do not lay directly underneath the thermostat housing as the coolant from the engine will begin to drain as soon as you loosen the bolts on the housing. Keep a towel or cloth with you to clean off any spilled coolant .
  7. Remove the thermostat housing from the engine and lift the old thermostat out of the housing. Use a piece of emery cloth to clean the face of the thermostat housing and the engine block where the housing is mounted from any remaining gasket material or debris.
  8. Spread a layer of gasket seal around the face of the thermostat housing and place the new thermostat on the housing, with the thermostat spring facing out from the housing. Position the housing back on the engine block and secure it to the block with the bolts.
  9. Replace the pan the sits across the bottom of the engine of your Audi A4 and then refill the radiator with coolant and put the radiator cap back on the radiator. Remove the wood block from the back tire of your vehicle. Turn the engine on and drive the Audi A4 off of the car ramps. Allow the engine to run at idle for a few minutes to verify that the thermostat is working properly and then shut the engine off.
Hope this helped. Thank You for using FixYa!!!

Where is the thermostat on my 2.8 V6 engine 1999?

If it's the same as the 99 2.8 V6 in the A4, it's quite a ways inside the front of the engine. You have to remove a lot of the front of the engine and you'll find it partially hidden behind the timing belt tensioner. Foolish place to put such a part unfortunately, but at least on my A4 that's where it is.
