Replaced alternator, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, rotary and pick up, idle air control valve, starter relay, starter, and put a new battery on. I think the timing is off but it ran a few times before this with the timing being off. It's getting spark, it has fuel and it almost cranks over but won't fully crank over. When it was running it was backfiring and jolting really bad. Please any ideas on either what is wrong or how I could get it timed enough to get it to start to get somewhere to get it timed properly??? Thanks.
This happend to me before. Go back and check the firing order and make sure the spark plug wires are in the right place. A Chilton auto repair book for your vehicle, available at many auto part stores are really helpful. Check the rotor and distributor cap also and make sure they seat properly. Assuming the distributor itself has not been removed it should start. If the distributor was removed from the vehicle and not installed in the exact position it was before (maybe a couple of notches off) you will have to find top dead center on the compression stroke on plug #1 and check to see if the rotor is pointing at the at plug wire #1 on the distributor cap. The distributor itself can be adjusted by loosening the locking nut and turning it slowly clokwise or counter clokwise to ****** or advance the spark. make sure all your vacume lines are in the right place also. All these procedures can be found in the book.
There is a pointer on the harmonic balancer behind the main pulley on the crank shaft. it might be dirty so you will have to clean it to see the marks. With a breaker bar or large ratchet with a deep socket rotate the engine untill you are where you need to be on the pointer. If in fact you have to re- stab the distributor, keep in mind that you will have to use a flat tipped screwdriver to turn the oil pump drive shaft to a point where the distributor falls in place properly this is quite difficult and will require alot of trial and error.
please disregard the useing of a screwdriver to turn the oil pump drive shaft, this is for another type of engine.

Pull number one spark plug and put your pinky in the hole, rotate the engine with the starter solenoid and when u feel pressure at max u are near or at number one cylinder top dead center, bring the timing mark to 10 deg BTDC and then pull distributor and point the rotor to number one plug wire terminal.

i'm sure the timing is off i just need to know if there's some way to time it without a timing gun just to get it started.
believe we found top dead center at the number one cylinder but how do i bring the timing mark to 10 deg BTDC if there are no markings? how do i find 10 deg BTDC? thanks.
the timing is retarted.
