A couple of things....change out the thermostat, and check to see if you have water dripping from your water pump.if you do then change out your water pump.and check if both top and bottom hoses are getting hot if they are then that means water is circulating through your engine which is a good thing.
Need to bleed cooling system. check coolant level add more if needed .crank engine run it until start getting warm dont run it until it over heat.you want to get it operating temp.to get thermostat to open.when engine start to get warm .shut off engine wait awhile .before removing radiator cap so you wont get scalded.check coolant level add .crank engine let it run feel top and bottom radiator hoses.when they get hot your are getting there.turn off engine wait a while before removing radiator cap. when your coolant level dont drop no more in radiator you have bleed the air out. some cars dont have radiator cap if you add antifreeze in the over flow jug if you have over flow jug dont over fill keep coolant level at cold mark.if you got radiator bring coolant level a 1 inch from the top .
It sounds like there is air in the cooling system that should be bled off. Most cars have a bleeder valve located near the thermostat housing, I'm not familiar with Saab though. If the engine light is on, you should have trouble codes read to see if something else is going on. Most parts stores do this for free. They plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port, and 'read' any codes stored in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and make recommendations, if you have any questions at that time, post them here with the code #'s.
You have gotten some air in the system . Try starting it when its cool and leave radiator cap off for a while and make sure it stays full of fluid while running .. also make sure your over flow is full or at proper level. also while running turn on the heater. to circulate fluid in it also... let it run for a few minutes and watch it to make sure it stays full of antifreeze then replace the cap .. you should see it like burp some air out and you will have to replace it with fluid .. hope this helps you thanks Jerry

Thanks all..I was going to replace the thermostat but it hard to get to, I will attempt to bleed the system although Saab dosent have a radiator cap. Should I leave the reserve cap off?
