Sounds like the solenoid not grounded if you try to start and all it does is click then the solenoid is not grounded and if it's built on to the starter which it might be you might have to replace the starter. Try cleaning the wires going to the starter before you buy a new they may be corroded.

Your starter is most likely out. Also, double check all your positive and negative battery connections from the battery, all the way to the end of the cables

My 97 dodge avenger wont start

It sounds like a bad starter, but you still have to check power at starter start wire for 12 volts when the key is turned to start position. It is the smaller wire plugged into the starter. You still also have check for a good ground cable, most have bad grounds. Also, you need to check for proper voltage at the batterry first, to determine whether or not it is starter related. If the battery is dead then more than likely it is an
alternator.

I just bought a 1997 dodge avenger yesterday and i turn the key, i get lights but it wont turn over. we checked the neutral safety switch and un hooked the security system. i dont know whats the deal with...

Sounds like it could be the battery or the starter, have you tried jump starting it? If so were you able to keep it running afterwards, and if so, would it start again after it idled for a few minutes, or a half hour?

1996 Dodge Avenger ES 2.5L All I get is a click

Check Battery connects,Cables.Clean !Also to engine ground. Then Alternator belt tension.Listen for slippage. Check connection on starter relay, and bolts on starter, tap on starter while a buddy starts engine, with the key. Could be bad brushes in starter and or bad relay at starter.

98 dodge avenger es 6 cyl., won't start

Is you battery going dead? How old is the battery? After 4-5 years a battery is bad and needs to be replaced.

It sounds like you didn't replace the alternator?

Do you get a click when you try to start and it wont start?

Also check the grounds on the starter they could have corroded and this would cause an non-normal starting pattern. To chech these locate them, usually close to that starter and screwed into the frame of the vehicle. Unscrew them and take a wire brush and clean them very good making sure to expose bare metal. Do the same to the frame where it is screwed into.

Make sure to unhook you battery before doing anything!

I have a 1999 dodge avenger it want start

When you had the starter checked did you check the solenoid on the starter? If you can find a way to get to it, try using something hard to tap your solenoid and then try starting it. If that doesn't work try tapping the solenoid and starter while someone else turns the key. The starter may be good but the solenoid could be stuck inside. Hope this helps let me know how it goes. Good luck!
