Firing sequence/numbering on distributor cap of Landrover Discovery 1, 3.9lit V8, 1998 model
Posted by dupben on Apr 25, 2009
I need to know the firing sequence/numbering on the distributor cap and also the numbering of pistons/sparkplugs when I am standing in front of the engine. Old spark-plug wires were removed from plug & distributor cap and sequence was not noted & therfore do not know the numbering and sequence in which to put this in the correct way

Assuming you know the basics of how an engine works the firing order is 1, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
Standing in front of the vehicle, facing the rear of the vehicle, the cylinder layout is this. Left side is the EVEN numbers and the right side is the ODD numbers. Number One is nearest to you on the right side. Number Two is nearest to you on the Left. Number 3 is the middle right, Number 4 is the middle left. 5 is back right and 6 is back left.
At the distributor the leads should be fitted in the firing order sequence moving in a CLOCKWISE direction. On some distributor caps the terminal for cylinder One is marked with a number on the top of the cap.
The cylinders Don't fire as pairs they fire in sequence alternating right to left.
go google and type in-- firing order for golf 1.4ltr 2006 model -- and there are pages that will show the firing order and the rotation of the distributor
Set the crankshaft so number one piston is about to fire and the distributor rotor arm will be pointing to the number one distributor cap segment - connect the number one spark plug lead to this.
Note the direction of distributor rotation and each lead in the firing order should be connected to each segment in that direction...
Jeffery is exactly opposite to the facts. The cylinders are numbered standing in front of the engine left bank front cylinder ( the cylinder nearest to the front first 2 4 6 8
right bank front cylinder first 1 3 5 7

Yes. Bring number 1 piston to top dead center of the compression stroke. Remove the distributor cap and see which post on the cap the rotor button is pointing to. This is where the number 1 plug wire goes. Follow your firing order on the cap in the same direction the distributor turns and your firing order will be right.
Hi,
I don't know your engine size, but the link below is a picture of the GM small block firing order with distributor.
The firing order, which should be cast into the intake manifold, for the chevy small block V8 is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The firing order is the numerical sequence in which the spark plugs are fired. The insertion position of each spark plug wire around the circumference of the distributor cap can be found according to a clock face. The insertion sequence determines the firing order. The firing order is followed clockwise around the distributor cap starting from the 6:30 position with the 6:30 position being the number one cylinder spark plug wire.
Recheck the rotor position and spark plug wiring for correct positions for starters. camshaft sensor? ------------------- You need to bump the starter over till you get the timing mark up on the front of the harmonic balancer to line up with the - O degree, Top Dead Center mark (TDC) first. With the Distributor cap off the distributor so you can see the Rotor. The rotor will rotate almost to the front pointing at the back of the throttle body of the EFI. You need to mark the distributor cap , once you get it on ZERO, to mark it as number one, on the post bulge on the cap that the rotor points to. this is the post we start with in putting the wires back on in sequence. This puts the wires back on the cap according to the firing order you see on the intake manifold. The rotation of the rotor you see...as you bump the started over, tells you how the wires...in sequence go around the cap...the firing order from number 1 goes in that direction. Remember on the vehicle ..the odd numbered cylinders are on the drivers side...Number one at the front ..then 3, 5, 7 to the back. All the even cylinders are passanger side 2 at the front ..then 4, 6, 8 in order to the back. You really need to tab the wires at the Cap End... as to which one is which cylinder. Use a piece of masking tape make a flag tab folded around the wire so you can easily see its number. Then run your sequence of firing order puting the wires to the cap in that order. This assumes you still have the wires on the right sparkplug....if you pulled the wires off the Cap and the sparkplugs...its OK..just mark which ones fit to the cylinder...one at a time...and tab it the same number on each end first. Post back if you are lost...tell me what has been removed...and what you left hooked up the same as it was BEFORE you started. It will go back together...and run . If you pulled out the distributor base then we need to talk.
