Locking mechanism is broken on driver's door.

I have a used '98 AUDI A6 Quattro. Upon purchase only the valet key was given to me. The lock of the door mechanism has broken in some way. When the key is in the slot, it only turns with very little tension, and obviously is not flipping any switches inside the car to unlock it.

A locksmith did get the door to open, however [I'm assuming] since it's a valet key, when I put it into the ignition and attempt to start the car, nothing happens. Is there any way to
A) shut off/reset the alarm security system that's keeping the kill on the engine?
B) start the car just so that I may drive it to a repair shop?

If the valet key is not programmed to the Immobilzer system, it should start the car, but it will shut off. This is only if the car has an Immobilizer system. If your locksmith unlocked the car without the door key, then use the key to unlock and disarm the alarm in the door. If you triggered the alarm, the starter will be disabled till a unlock signal from a remote or the door is actually unlocked with a key. If that cannot be done, your only solution right now is to tow it to the dealership and have them make a master key and check the door locks for proper lock/unlock commands so the alarm will arm and disarm correctly.

There may not be a connection to manually locking and remote locking. Have the key programmed first and then see if there is a problem

I drive a 2000 audi quattro A6. my driver side door will not unlock from the key remote or with the key. when i try to unlock with the key it rolls all my windows down and unlock all other doors exept...

sounds like the hard wire attached to the key lock may be off or broken..this happens a lot when a car is "slim jimmed" or used a coat hanger to unlock the door.. or it could be from just normal wear.. the door panel will have to come off the door to be able to look inside and see what is happening.. simple, inexpensive fix for someone with a little mechanical ability

Check wire harness between driver door and body for broken wires.Wire harness bends , when door opens and closes so it may brake the wire or two inside harness.

Audi A6 Anti Theft Central Locking Tantrums

Sounds like you are having problems with your built-in alarm system. Like most systems in your Audi, you can read the error codes stored in the controllers. It takes a tool normally only a dealer has (VW or Audi) or an adapter like the VAG Com. (Google it)

I also think you can disable the alarm system and just use the key.

Could the lock button on your remote be stuck? Use a different key/remote. (leaving the suspect key at home.) The keys/remotes can be taken apart....

Locked door

I've had a similar problem with the drivers door locking up twice, wouldn't open from the inside or with the key/remote. Audi needed to replace it I'm afraid thats the only option once it has ceased. Could try releasing the mechanism and cleaning it down but replacement was the only option for mine!
