1999 Mercury Sable transmission problem. Torque converter clutch locked up solid. Runs great in neutral and park. Put it in gear and it dies down and surges to try to keep from stalling. Occasionally stalls at stop signs. Goes down the road fine but will not free-wheel and idle dips back down and lugs on the transmission when stopped.

SOURCE: engine stalls at stop lights and stop signs

sounds like the torque converter lock up might not be disengaging. You might also want to check for engine vacuum leaks. Does engine idle smoothly when in park or nuetral ? if the idle is good I would suspect torque converter problem.

SOURCE: corsica stalls at stop signs

sounds like the EGR valve is sticky, take a small screw driver and tap the valve when the engine is at idle and you will notice a change in the way the engine runs, if the vehicle smooths out disconnect the valve and drive the vehicle and it should not cut off please let me know and dont forget to rate me!!

SOURCE: My 1999 grand prix stalls and dies at stops.

My Pontiac Grand Prix is also a 99, it has 216,+ thousand miles on it, it runs great, idles good, I need to replace the oxygen sensor tho as it shuts off on me while driving or sometimes coming to a stop. You might try checking the fuel filter and pump as well.

Inhave a 1999 ford expedition it cranks like a dream but when put in gear it sputters and dies recranks great the sputters and dies in gear

You have a transmission problem. Tcc(torque converter clutch) solenoid stuck. Basically when you put it in drive, it is starting out in overdrive. Causing the engine to die.

Ford, Mercury Taurus, Sable, Windstar, Freestar. inop Transaxle

If you have no gears at all and it rolls in neutral and holds in park. The cause is the torque converter. The drive for the pump shaft has stripped out and is no longer turning the pump to create line pressure to engage the clutches.

What causes engine to stall when put in gear?

Could be the torque converter, TCC lock up, or the transmission is bad. If it idles good and revs OK in park and neutral, I would look at the Third or fourth clutch pressures in gear at idle. Could be other things. Like torque one the engine. Scanner needed.

Do you have any codes? If so, what are they?
If not, this could be a mechanical problem with either the torque converter itself or some sort of stuck valve in the valve body inside the transmission.
I just replaced the valve body in my wife's 1999 Mercury Sable and it cleared up a number of problems she was having with shifting and torque converter lock up.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck!

1998 Mercury Sable: I changed the transmission seal and now when it shifts the light starts blinking overdrive. Could it be that a clip or sensor is not hooked up because it shifted great before and the...

Which seal was replaced? The torque converter (or main seal). Or one of the axle seals? Or another seal somewhere else? Usually the O/D light flashes when you have a TCC solenoid or shift solenoid problem. Like... if there's no power going to the torque converter lock-up solenoid, It will not go into fourth gear because the tcc solenoid cannot lock up the torque converter properly. Depending on which seal you've replaced, it may just be a coincidence. Maybe the light would have done this regardless. Either that or maybe something is not connected tightly. Maybe one of the transmission connectors.
I had the same light flashing in mine when I disconnected the valve body wiring connector because my torque converter was locked up solid and that was the only way I could move the car into the garage.
I would take a good look at the transmission connectors and make sure that all the connectors are tight.
I hope this helps, good luck!

I can start up my 97 Mercury Sable just fine. But when I go to shift it into any gear it dies. What could be causing this?

If your engine stops abruptly, you could have a torque converter clutch malfuntion. Not terribly common on taurus, but have seen it. Car will bang hard into gear and stall if this is the case. Possible to be electrical but probably would need a new torque converter,

Your transmission torque converter lock up clutch is not unlocking, that kills the engine and is the cause of the OD light flashing.
