Engine Performance problem
1999 Chevy Cavalier 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 145000 miles
I have a 1999 cavalier with a 2.2 liter engine front wheel drive. Currently the engine blows out black smoke, and really goes at it on hills. It has the error code number P0171 is on the check engine light. Currently I have replaced the, bank 1 and bank 2 o2 sensor with both bosche manufactured ones. IAT sensor, the map sensor, the coolant temperature sensor which has the car running some better. But still hesitates and stumbles while driving, and of course the black smoke. Just had the exhaust fixed and a new catalytic converter put on it fell off so I opted just to replace it.
Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.

Sorry I accidentely posted this to the wrong spot.
An update to this problem, currently I have the car running much better and I am sure it's not the engine. Its running smooth and no longer blowing out black smoke after I put a new fuel pressure regulator on the fuel injector and a few other parts. I am now suspecting the bosche o2 sensor was junk upon arival to store.
good to hear it's not the engine...kinda thought it wasn't, that's why I went for an "odd-ball" idea. After all that rich running probably wouldn't hurt to remove and at least clean up the plugs...likely a lot of carbon fluff on them.
Check to see if you have a vacuum modulator on the side of your transmission, if so, remove the hose that goes to it and see if there is any trans fluid in the line, or in the modulator itself. If the diaphram in there fails it will **** trans fluid into the engine and cause smoke. (may or may not be your problem but it's a good often overlooked place to check) Also if it has failed, check trans fluid level.
