The 1989 model is wired differently from the 1990 model. So this is for the 89 model only.
You should have about 10 volts to the coil from a ballast resistor which gets power from the key switch. The ground side of the coil is handled by the distributor.
Is the coil getting power from the key switch ?

i would change out the distributor cap ,rotor button wires and spark plugs

Could be the lift pump, common problem on the 2004. There is a fix for it called an in tank lift pump conversion. Ask your dealer or check online.

it sounds like the altenator is not keeping a charge

check your turbo see if its working.

try cleaning the battery post and also try starting it in nuetral.

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter in it, i couldnt keep it running when i stopped at stop signs, the two things i tried, was taking off the air cleaner and sprayed carb cleaner into the intake manifold with the engine running, using the carb cleaner and the throttle linkage to keep it running, before i did this i noticed the throttle valves were dirty, so I inspected the air filter housing and saw it was cracked in multiple places. The second thing i did was reset the computer using a scanner then took my truck out on the highway and drove at least 50 MPH for at least a mile which re-learned the computer. my ram 50 starts just like any other vehicle, (no light switch pulling whatso ever), it sounds like somebody haas rewired something wrong or you have a loose connection and when you hit a large enough bump it cuts your power. Start it up and find a speed bump somewhere and drive over it enough to give your truck a jolt and see if it dies.
