Severe wheel wobble when braking on steep decents

It is not wheel wobble but vibration from the front brakes. The front brake rotors have worn unevenly (known as disc thickness variation - DTV) and when this occurs you will get vibration from the front rotors as you apply the brakes and it is especially noticeable when braking on down hill runs. DTV is usually caused by poor alignment of the rotors on the hub. In other words sloppy installation procedures.

You will need to replace both the rotors and brake pads on the front and make sure the business that does the work properly checks the rotor for run out.

Min thickness of front disc rotor

Perform this measurement in four areas of the rotor and make a note of each measurement taken. If the rotor is below 1.024 inches thick on the front or 0.413 inches on the rear, it must be replaced.

Minimum rotor thickness

ON most disc rotors the minimum thickness is cast into the body of the rotor and will read min thickness and a dimension. The dimension is also available in the workshop manuals and from the service department of your vehicle. Do not be surprised if you find that your dimensions are almost at do not machine limits as original rotors are not much thicker than the low limit.

What is the minimum required thickness allowed after wear on front vented rotor/discs vw golf mk3 vr6 presently the thickness of each surface on each side of the vented disc is 6mm and are quite lipped.

The standard vented rotor is 20mm (0.787 inches) thick and should be ground to no less than 18.5mm (0.728 inches) for your vehicle. The measurement is taken with a micrometer measuring total thickness from inside of rotor to the outside of the rotor.
Good luck.
