The inside panel of the hatch has to be removed to gain access to the locking mechanism which is stuck or unhinged.

the release at the bottom of hatch can be ---rusted normal in northeast --- linkage popped or broken --linkage clip popped or broken --- need to crawl into back and remove the plug [ lower center of rear hatch panel will need a long screw driver and light will see linkage and latch push down on linkage arm and push open hatch when opened you can remove the rear panel and assess the problem but lube the latch and upper window latch

sounds like the latch is sticking on the door striker, try spray lubricant into the locking mechanism where the latch is and tighten all the screws

sounds like the system needs lubricated you'll have to remove door panel to access the rods as well as the lock mechanism clean off an lub check for any bent or loose parts rubbing

2005 GMC BACK HATCH WON'T OPEN

It sounds like the lock actuator has failed or has a poor connection which won't allow the latch to release. What you will need to do is remove the inside rear hatch panel to access the lock actuator. Once you get to the latch use a flat screwdriver to release the latch being careful not to damage the glass.

Broken rear hatch door handle on Toyota Sequioa

It sounds like the handle has become disconnected from the mechanism. You will have to remove the inner door panel and reattch. It is not a complicated or difficult job but if you get a professional it could cost upwards of $100.
