The clock spring behind the steering wheel could be bad, about a $100.00 part through Ford

  • scott Apr 21, 2009

Is there a beeping sound under the dash? That would be a problem sound that the system is not right,a black module, right side of column maybe?also check if there is any fuses blown. Are you for sure you didnt break the clock spring from the old column? They can only wind up so much in either direction.Hope this works for you.

Horn swith or clock spring ? Is air bag light lit on the instrument cluster ? You would have to take air bag module off the steering wheel .An to do that you have to deenergize the air bags , pull a fuse an disconnect the negative battery cable . How do i reset an airbag code 19?

I assume you are counting the air bag light flash, If so light flash 19 is for an drivers side air bag circuit, problem which could be low resistance, circuit open ,short to voltage short to ground. and cannot be cleared or reset until the concern is corrected.ford motor vehicles air bag light will go out when concern is no longer present but will remain in memory, I would start by inspecting wiring under dash going up to steering wheel ,the air bag connector is located just to right of steering column when sitting in the drivers seat after removing the trim panel below the steering column and is a yellow connector, Please use caution when connecting or disconnecting any connectors to air bag system ,battery should be disconnected for min of ten min's prior to attempting any work on air bag curcuits. I have seen many problems in the past with the air bag itself also with the clock spring ,question does the horn, cruise control and steering wheel controls for audio system (IF SO EQuIPPED) work properly? if not there is very possibly a clock spring problem

If the computer in the air bag diagnostic monitor detects an open in the air bag indicator circuit and if another system fault exists, then the air bag diagnostic monitor will turn on its internal tone generator (beeper). The beep pattern is five sets of five beeps. The pattern is repeated every 30 minutes while the ignition switch is in the ON position. The five beeps do not indicate a code five or any other code. The air bag indicator circuitry must be repaired before the diagnostic trouble code can be read.

1998 Ford windstar horn wiring

There is something called a clock spring in the column that is used for the airbag, horn and cruise control buttons. This clock spring if messed with will cause a/bag light to come on and possibly cause a/bag failure if there is a collision. DON"T mess with the wiring in the column. Run new wires in to the horn or install an a/market horn.
