Re: 1999 VW Bug Service engine Light
When you say water light comes on, do you mean coolant level, or coolant temp or ? Check coolant level and top off if needed. Bring the Beetle to a parts store, most offer free check of check eng. light. They will plug a hand held scan tool into the cars diagnostic port (usually located under the dash) and 'read' stored engine codes in the cars computer. They can tell you what the codes mean, and suggest what to do. If you have further questions, post them here along with the code numbers.

. most likely you need to change the remote battery.
It's responcable for many things working correctly. my daughters car locked on her and the alarm sounded and had to disconnect battery in her car to get alarm to stop. when a theft is in process the vehicle takes over and don't allow it to crank and the radio also stops working along with other things. so try battery first in remote.
You need to check the engine all over when the engine over heats it very hard on it and could melt wiring and plastic parts after you check that look at the relays if the fan is out one of the relays may be out and you would need to replace it
typically any flashing light is a misfire, which could create cat convertor failure. codes will be something with 300 via 301 cyl 1, 302 cyl 2 etc. Many things can cause this via plugs, wires, coolant temp sensor, maf and so on. Suggest getting it checked out asap.
the light comes on to alert you there is a problem with the engine, such as a bad 02 sensor for instance.you can reset the computer to make that light go off by disconnecting the positive cable on battery for 5mins. after doing this, if it comes back on, there is a problem, auto zone can code read your car for free if you're near one i do suggest you do that, hope this helps!!
Ok, first, you should clear the fault. Sometimes the system will get a bug, and there's not really a problem. You can do this by disconnecting the battery for 10-20 minutes. This will clear any faults. Next, see if the light comes back. If it does, then you can take it to get the codes scanned at a parts store(many do it for free.) Once you get the code and description, you have to troubleshoot the specific system that the code covers. The check engine lights are usually triggered by sensors going bad. On occasion, you will get an actual mechanical failure that will cause one.
You can go to a local autoparts store, and most will scan your codes for free, and tell you what caused the light to come on. Sometimes the light is tripped by a loose or damaged gas cap, but usually it is a sensor of some sort. Anyway, having an idea what caused the light will let you know for free if there is a problem that needs attention.
