I'd be more leaning toward IAT sensor in your intake manifold.(2 wires usually) It basically senses incoming air temperature & sends info to computer to adjust injector flow according to incoming air temperature conditions.

Sounds like your idle air control valve is bad. This valve, like it sounds, controls the idle on your vehicle and from what you make it sound like you are having idle issues. The IAC is located on your throttle body and is pretty easy to change out. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

SOURCE: 98 dodge avenger es 6 cyl., won't start

Is you battery going dead? How old is the battery? After 4-5 years a battery is bad and needs to be replaced.

It sounds like you didn't replace the alternator?

Do you get a click when you try to start and it wont start?

Also check the grounds on the starter they could have corroded and this would cause an non-normal starting pattern. To chech these locate them, usually close to that starter and screwed into the frame of the vehicle. Unscrew them and take a wire brush and clean them very good making sure to expose bare metal. Do the same to the frame where it is screwed into.

Make sure to unhook you battery before doing anything!

if the timing is off you wouldn't have good compression
make sure you have at least 136-170 psi and the different should not be more than 14 psi.

I have a 1997 dodge avenger es 2.5 liter here's

Check the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator for any sign of gas being sucked into the line. A failed regulator will let extra gas get into the engine. If it's okay, have the fuel pressure checked. That's sure a lot of gas, way too much for the engine. Good luck.

I have a 1996 dodge avenger ES 2.5 and my horn wont stop honking, i replaced the fuse, the relay and the horn itself..... it still wont quit. Any ideas?

In most cases this problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament, the part is known as a clock spring contact, u will need to properly disarm the airbag and remove the steering wheel to access the part. WARNING: Failure to disarm the airbag system can result in an unexpected Airbag deployment and possible serious personnel injury disconnect the battery 30 minutes prior to start of work

Check Battery connects,Cables.Clean !Also to engine ground. Then Alternator belt tension.Listen for slippage. Check connection on starter relay, and bolts on starter, tap on starter while a buddy starts engine, with the key. Could be bad brushes in starter and or bad relay at starter.

1996 Dodge Avanger ES- no spark. V6 2.5L

First check the primary (12 v ) to the coil.Next the coil center wire must have a high voltage spark to the distributor cap, if not then your coil is the problem. If you have a good sharp spark from the coil proceed to check the distributor, capacitator, rotor, points (or electronic ignition. You check the spark by having someone crank the engine while you hold the wire far enough away for the spark to jump to ground.Be careful as this is high voltage like a stun gun.Good Luck.
