I have a 97 Cadillac eldorado and although the temp gage doesn't read hot, it sometimes floats a little over the 1/2 way mark. seems really hot. You can smell coolant and the top big radiator hose doesn't get tight. (Not sure if its supposed to). Fan kicks on. No smoke from exhaust. Starts and runs fine. Please help.

If the temp gauge periodically rises higher than normal and then falls back to normal, you probably need to change the thermostat as it may be sticking shut and then popping open. It's a good time to change some hoses, coolant and check the belts if they've been on the car for awhile.

Is your temperature gauge working now? That is of more concern then your heater as you wouldnt know if your engine was overheating until its too late. Your heater core could be clogged, they get clogged quite easily. You can flush them or replace. The part is inexpensive but on some models you have to take out dash to replace them, but on other models it only takes about 30 mins and a few bolts.

Sounds like you have a faulty head gasket or maybe a cracked head. This can cause overheating and the check engine light to come on.The code for the o2 sensor is probably caused by coolant getting into the exhaust system and coating the sensor. The coolant fan may work but it cannot remove enough heat from the rad to make the engine cool off.Try some engine coolant stop leak to see if it will help. This maybe only a temperary fix.Let me know if you need more.MOE

I have a 97 Eldorado. It used to loose coolant. But that is fixed by tightening a hose clamp. But it seems to run hot even though the gage is on half way mark. Just the feel of the hoses (hot and very...

the thermo fan's won't start or the gauge won't read at all depending on what you mean by therm sensor. They should feel hot and tight. Running temp is 80-90 deg C on standard street vehicles and cooling system pressure should be around 15 psi

My Eldorado has 173000 miles, well maintained, uses little oil, runs ok until recently - at about 60-65 mph, the tach is on about 2000 rpm, the needle is bouncing until you step on the accelerator, gently,...

Could be a bad computer not supplying right fuel injector pulses. This happened to my 1990 cadillac deville at about 35 mph, it would buck and miss.
Also, I would flush the coolant system and install new coolant.

Make sure you put in the correct temp thermostat. GM usually has 2. A low temp and a high temp. Most shops will give ya the high temp just because thats usually what the book calls for. you might want to try a low temp. Also, sometimes, when a car runs hot and everything has been repaired....well, almost everything......it might be the head gaskets. And those my friend are no easy task. But..somewhere to start. have your cooling system pressure tested. Only way to really know for sure. Oh..also make sure your fan is working!!!! You might have a faulty fan switch.
