I purchased a 1996 Thunderbird LX 4.6 Automatic almost a year ago, been changing new parts on it as I drive it daily. The O.D. button is on the floor mounted gear shift, and I am assumming the transmission is needing a filter/fluid change but my instincts is telling me either change out the transmission. As from stop position and drive it goes through 1st and 2nd then third the RPM's jump and there's no third gear and then goes to over drive, it's slipping in third gear.I just want to confirm my thought on this problem .. thank you

Have it checked for DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes in the transmission control module ! Sounds like a bad shift solenoid .

SOURCE: Intermittent Rough Idle in gear at stop

well it didn't hurt anything to put the new fluids in. Always good to keep up on those some of the time forgotten routine maintenance. The erratic idle could be caused by a number of things. A leaking intake manifold gasket is one but usually is a steady higher racing idle. Could be clogged injector/s, not sure if you have a throttle body which would house a single injector or a fuel rail which would house 4, one by each cylinder. The other possibilities are any of the sensors that feed the information needed to the brain/on board computer to control the air and fuel to the engine under all conditions for optimal performance, and the emission control system.
Trouble shooting comes with several options. Fortunately most vehicles since the start of the electronic fuel injection systems, that would be everything since the end of the carburetor, comes with some description of an on board diagnostic system for trouble shooting the sensors and such. You can purchase a diagnostic tool, and you will need to purchase a Haynes or Chiltons Manual for your year make and model which will tell you what all of the different codes mean. You can find these at any of the auto part chains such as Auto Zone, Discount Auto Parts, Pep Boys etc. Most of these stores will test your on board diagnostics with their tool free of charge. The Manual never hurts to have in your possession as it covers mostly everything from A to Z for mechanical and electrical repair and troubleshooting. Some vehicles have a way of giving you error msg's by a series of turning the ignition key on and off a certain number of times, and giving a code by a series of an in dash light blinking and pausing, this would also be covered in the manual for your make and model.
Hope this helps,
Matt

SOURCE: transmission wont shift

check the kickdown/throttle valve cable. It may be bound up and stuck in the maximum position giving you extremely late shifts.

There ISN"T any modulators or vac lines on any Chrysler automatics

SOURCE: Transmission problem in E230 Benz

What you need to check is the transmission release bearing because if there is a clearance on the release bearing you will encounter this problem and also check the transmission oil.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX lubing ports location.

Question edited for full year MAKER model.
Question moved from Fitness Equipment category.

Limited information in the link. Really you need a workshop manual and then refer to the section that you might want to lube. Anything that moves like hinges, you just give them a squirt of oil. Engine oil and filter are the main lube concern. Things like steering joints have grease n1pples that you connect a grease gun to. I don't know of anything that is referred to as a 'lubing port'.

1996 Ford Thunderbird LX V8 Automatic Transmission shudder

Check rear emergency brakes if you have 4 wheel discs. When soot and brake lining fall to bottom of assembly they jam and shudder until wheels start rolling fast enough to scatter debris.

Also if posi equipped there is a needed rear-end additive to help clutch plates work. Perhaps clean rear-end lube and additive is needed.

Transmisson on a 3.8L automatic V6 Thunderbird problem.

Never add anything to an automatic trans but the correct fluid.
New fluid will make it slip worse
Lucas-is a waste of money and may ruin your trans.
You may get away with removing the valve body and cleaning it.
I would suggest a trans repair shop, but don't let them sell you on rebuilding yours until they try the valve body, unless the fluid is burn't,then your done, as you already should know

There is an old TSB Technical service bulletin that covers this concern. You will need to call or visit the nearest Ford or Lincoln dealer and they should be able to look in the OASIS databank.

1996 thunderbird 4 6 power brakes and power steering fades in and out while driving"

This may be your problem.

FORD: 1994-96 THUNDERBIRD LINCOLN-MERCURY: 1994-96 COUGAR ISSUE: Steering efforts at low speeds may intermittently increase to the heavier for highway setting on some vehicles. This is due to electrical "noise" from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) being picked up by the Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) module. The EVO module then interprets this as an increase in vehicle speed and reduces the steering assistance to the heavier for highway level.
ACTION: Replace the EVO module with a new module that has improved filtering for electrical noise. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE Replace EVO module (F6SZ-3F712-BB). Locations are as follows:
  • On 1994-95 vehicles, the EVO module is located under the package tray in the trunk.
  • On 1996 vehicles, the EVO is located under the heater blower case on the passenger side.
Refer to Section 11-02 of the appropriate year Thunderbird/Cougar Service Manual for additional diagnosis and repair information.

PART NUMBER PART NAME F6SZ-3F712-BB Electronic Variable Orifice Module OTHER APPLICABLE ARTICLES: NONE
WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under The Provisions Of Bumper To Bumper Warranty Coverage
OPERATION DESCRIPTION TIME 960402A Replace Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) Module - 1994-95 Thunderbird/Cougar 0.5 Hr. 960402B Replace Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) Module - 1996 Thunderbird/Cougar 0.3 Hr.

its not the alternator, I have a 96 thunderbird and i had the same problem. its an open ground wire somewhere. Make sure your interior lights are turning off when you shut the car off. if the ground is touching metal they will stay on. If they dont then its probably just barely rubbing, I pulled all my floor lights out and havent had a problem since. you dont need to pull the accesory lights just the 4 floor lights ( 1 in each door and 2 under the panel)
