SOURCE: how to remove steering column from a 1970-1981

disconnect the battery under the hood under the brake cylinder on steering shaft there is an 11/16 nut remove that slide the bolt out there should be a small linkage arm with a rod going to the transmission remove the clip that holds the rod to the small arm and pop out the rod it might be tough under the dash on floor unbolt the bolts 7/16 head around the black plate to the left of the gas pedal up under the dash where the column meets the dash there are 2 studs pointing down remove the nuts 9/16 head and slowly lower the column down just enough to reach in and remove the electrical plugs from the ignition switch turn signal plug and the bottom of column the neutral safety switch turn the column so the small arm clears the hole in floor and pull the column up towards you while tugging on it hope this helps

The steering column is loose in my cavalier 2002, is that a easy fix?

well, most steering columns have a bracket that hooks to dash to keep column from moving. most cars have a bracket with 2 bolts to hold it up. but check to see if the intermediate steering shaft that goes through firewall is ok! you should be able to find the problem. good-day!

Tilt steering after locking into a position will still wobble as though the universal joint is loose in the steering column. I have tried to get access to the univewrsal joint but have not been sucessfull...

most of the gm columns i've encountered from that era have a set of bolts that are only accessible after removing the steering wheel and the turn signal switch mechanism, this will require a set of specialized steering column tools, these are usually available for rent from most auto parts stores, the tools are important to prevent damage to the column parts and to prevent injury, there's a spring under pretty good pressure in there, consult a factory or haynes type service manual before taking any of this apart.

How do you change an ignition switch in a 1988 Firebird

You'll need to lower the steering column. It is usually mounted on top of the steering column, with 2 screws, and a couple of plugs plugging into it. Usually down towards the firewall.
