Idles to high

The idle is adjusted by the computer.. you did not tell us if the idle is too high or too low.. If too low check IAC.. If too high check for vac leaks, bound throttle cable, clean the mass air..

check your vacume hoses and if iyt has an idle controll valve that is off of the air intake. that should be the only things that would effect it

Check oil level that engine seems to burn it internally knocking could be rod knock or bearing.

Its not exactly adjustable, its controlled by the computer by using the idle air control valve.
If the idle speed is too high, you may have a vac leak, or the idle air control valve may be faulty.

i would start with checking the spark plug cables in some cases if there is a bad wire it can cause a irratic or high idle being a 96 it is probably fuel injected so i would check the throttle cable and throttle body it may need some cleaning or a sensor may be off such as the idle control valve.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
