I have a 2001 Z71 4wd with 235000 miles on it and i have a rubbing/light grinding noise coming from the left side front end. i have changed the wheel hub with no change to the noise.

Your wheel bearings need replaced,just replaced both front ones on my car,Then you will need to have your tires balanced,rotated and front end aligned.Mine was coming from my front driver side,it was loud,replaced,then the passenger side was making a noise,but not as loud,now it is like new.

Sounds like left front loose wheel bearing knocking ABS sensor out of range causing ABS light to come on and causing grind noise at same location. Grinding noise is probably rotor rubbing on calipar.

check to see if the dust shield behind the brake rotor got bent a little and is rubbing the rotor- cheers Denny

Only thin left is the wheel bearings failed or if front wheel drive then a failed cv /s joint. IF the bearings are faulty the grinding noise will be the disc rotor grinding on the caliper . Check out the front end and look for failed ball joints in the suspension.

Check bearings.

I had some issues with my 2005 explorer left rear. It was making a creepy old door sound at low speeds and then a high pitched whisel at high speeds. That turned out to be a broken wheel bearing and had it replaced. Note each wheel has two wheel bearings. After that a new noise developed that sounded like metal scraping/ grinding metal. It end up being the brake dust cover got bent when they replaced the bearing and it was rubbing something, the fix for that was bending it so it didn't rub. I hope this helps.

If you still think the noise is coming from the left side CV joint it would be more advisable to replace the entire axle as an assembly. For the time and effort it takes, you can usually get a rebuilt axle assembly for only a few dollars more than the CV joint and the boot required to repair one. You will need a large axle nut socket (usually 30 - 32mm) to remove the axle nut. The lower ball joint and tie rod will need to be separated along with the brake caliper and rotor, from the spindle. I would recheck the grinding noise before doing it. A lot of wheel bearings are mistakenly diagnosed to the wrong side. If the noise is loudest when turning left, most people would assume the left side wheel bearing is at fault. However if the noise is loudest turning left it indicates the right side wheel bearing is most likely at fault. Due to the weight distribution of the front end, turning left the weight all transfers to the right side, loading that bearing. Make sure thats not the case before tackling an axle.

its the brakesd you should change the pads from the back and for safety the ones int he front.good luck

Front wheel bearings are probobly going bad...they can be pricey so shop around...easy bolt in though...they should be replaced on both sides....there is a saying about how to diagnois which side is bad....get three mechanics to agree which side the noise is coming from....then change the other.....good luck...lee
