Have a load test done on the battery for a failing cell. Check the condition and tension of the drive belt.. Head lights suggest a failing battery.

SOURCE: 2001 Merc. Sable headlight replacement

There are two 10 millimeter bolts that must be removed. Place these in your pocket or a convenient place so they will not be mispalced or lost. Also you need to pull upwards and remove an aluminun locking tab(coated in black plastic). After this is done carefully slide assembly foward. Press down on the wiring harness clip to remove it from the headlight bulb assembly, Turn the locking ring on the bulb to the right and remove so you can remove the bulb. Twist bulb out. When replacing new bulb do not touch the glass portion of the bulb. If you do so clean off with alcohol. Oil from your fingers left on the bulb will cause the bulb to overheat and fail prematurely. Replace bulb and secure with locking ring. You may also want to change the yellow parking/signal light bulbs at the same time. Clip wiring harness back on and slide headlightassembly back into place. Slide aluminum locking tab back into place. Now hand thread 10mm bolts back into place, Then tighten, do not over tighten. Now do the other side. First time might take you about 10 minutes per side. After that you could do it in a couple of minutes. Info on performing this maintenence can be foud in the owners guide or by downloading the guide from the following link http://www.motorcraftservice.com/pubs/content/~WO1SAB/~MUS~LEN/40/01sabog3e.pdf

Hope this info helped.

Mechanics advised that gearbox needs replace after diagnostic Of codes . Dash light still on after codes being read , have had ecu replaced 2yrs ago ? What do you think it could be , thanks phil

didnt specify vehicle --generic answer--until repair is made the vehicle will show engine light and have codes --if gearbox is problem for limp mode /until repairs are made or gearbox replaced you will be in limp mode --and as to sensor find out what one it was --start problem may show back up if sensor was problem --and GET a 3rd opinion you have 2 mechanics with different opinions on your problem and i guess they are reading your trouble codes differently

Sometimes my interior and exterior lights including my dash lights , flicker and flash on and off when I am diving at night. What could possibly cause this to happen.

Does it flash like there was a security alert? But without the horn going off! Like 8-10 flashes and then goes back to normal!

If so I had this problem with my Jeep GC a couple years ago and had a hell of a time figuring it out. Got to the point, I wouldn't drive it at night.

When it got cold, sometimes I would have to jump the system to get it started. Checked the alternator, but the voltage show 13 Volts so thought it was okay. Replaced the battery, no change but longer between problems. Replaced battery cables, again no change but much longer between problems. Then I had the lights, AC, radio and everything on at once, and could tell that the electrical system was really stressed. Pushed in the cigarette lighter and the lights flashed before.

Changed the alternator - no more problems. Cured the not starting and lights flashing. The only thing I could come up with is that if the security system detects a low current flow it sets itself off, and then resets itself. So the low output from the alternator would cause the problem when a lot of electrical things were in operation at once.

My ford dealer replaced the alternator 18 months ago. I put on 60,000 miles. I see the red light flicker on the dash board. Is it time to replace the alternator?

since the alternator was just replaced 1 1/2 years ago I would say that it might not be the alternator but it could be your battery. I would take your car down to a battery shop and have them do a load test on the battery to see if the battery is starting to go bad and not holding the charge from the alternator.
if the battery test shows that the battery is good then the alternator is bad,, check your paper work from the dealer to see if it is under warranty.
