Kia Rio died in traffic. Will not start.

At an intersection, my 2001 Kia Rio literally shut down. I tried to restart and it came back to life for a second then shut down again. It wont budge now, when i turn the ignition it makes a revving sound like it wants to start but no luck. It sounds like the engine is not catching and there is no power...it is an automatic transmission.

Hello Kia Owner,
Regarding the shut down, when was the last time you changed the timing belt?? Did you know that the twin cam 1.5 lirte motor needs a new belt every 50,000 miles or 80,000 kms.
If the belt has failed it may still be in tact but with the cogs ripped off.
Your valves have collided with at least one piston but it is good you were only idling at the time.
The motor may be worth fixing. I just fixed mine myself. I had to lift the engine after removing the axles. I removed the old timing belt and removed and rebuilt the cylinder head(big job). Two exhaust valves were boken right off and lying inside one cylinder.
Most likely your timing belt failed as well.

2001 Kia Rio with brand new battery and alternator will start sometimes or with a jump but then shuts off. Jump it and it may run for a few minutes and quit again or work for days then just quit. ...

Sounds like you have a bad connection at the battery, wiggle the terminals they are very thin on that car. Check all your major grounds under the hood. All of that assuming the battery is in good condition
