Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2000 -Grand Cheerokee 4 x 4 select trac Front drive shaft turns all of the time Should it turn or is front axel not disengaging Is this a vacuum prolem?

Its not a vacuumproblem. the front axle is not disengaging

Is there an electric or vacuum switch on a 2001 chevy blazer

There are 2 models here the push button will flash if the system is not engaging or disengaging properly . If front drive shaft is turning. That is with car raised and supported . if front drive axles do not turn then the axle actuator is not engaging axle shaft passenger side. Remove actuator and manually engage shifting collar with a screwdriver still does not turn then inner axle is twisted.

I think im having the same problem. I just bought a 2000 grand laredo selec trac 100,000 miles,in full time4wd front drive shaft spins but jeep dont move in part time and lo 4wd it will move but still in 2wd?????? any answers

Transfer case still sending power to front wheels on 2000 excursion. HELP! I hear the "clunk" when its put into four high and low and when its disengaged, hubs will not turn at all, I try to turn...

It sounds like a problem with the drive shaft knuckle its a sealer unit and not serviceable See if when you turn the axle back and forth you hear or feel clunking noise or feel movement in the sealed joint Iwould check the conduition of wheel bearings this kind of a problem tends to create a lot of heat so a over hall of bolth front wheels mabey brakes and bearings is likely along with any axle problems you find It sounds like you waited to long to address this things like don't braek over night they give waring signs make noises viberate you need to look and listen. repairs tend to be much cheaper and easyer if you do. It still sounds like you can save it but you need to do everything that it needs good luck and sorry its not easy fix but it needs work

I have a95 jeep grand cherokee with all time 4 wheel drive when i make sharp turns i get a popping sound in front end

have the universal joint's checked on the drive shaft's ans the cv joint's on the axel's also check the transfer case oil

Not kicking into 4 wheel drive

Check to see if the front drive shaft is turning. If it is and the wheels are
not moving. Check the vacum actuator, located under the battery pan.
Make sure there are no leaks or kinks in the lines, do the same at the vacum solenoid valve. If these check out. Check the clutch cable from
the actuator to the front axel. Make sure it's not broken or kinked, as
the cable engages and disengages the front axel. But if the front drive
shaft is turning. And it's an electric shift control check the fuse first.
If it is transfer case related I will need to know whether it's manual or electric shift. You can get back to us with that info if neccesery.
Or if you find a problem with any of the parts I have mentioned.

Four wheel drive wont engage

Make sure you have plenty of 90 wt. in the front axle. I've got an '86 Cherokee Laredo. It doesn't kick right in to gear. You need to be moving, but not to fast. Sometimes reversing, then back into drive works.

When you disengage it, if you are moving at or above 30 mph, you'll hjear a rapid clicking from the front axle as it tries to let go. Put it in neutral for a second or two. That will take enough strain off the drive train to allow it to disengage.

4 wheel drive light is on in my jeep

vacumn pod on the front axel is stuck on. Jack up the front wheels spin both tires at the same time and see if the front drive shaft turns. If it does the 4x4 on the axel is engaged. The front drive shaft on these should not turn when vacumn pod is disengaged. YJ's have a split axel on the right side inner axel shaft.

check the vaccume module on the front axel it my have come un pluged or the electric connector hope this helps

Hi Terrell,

First off, thanks for the detailed description of your problem. I wish they were all as well written as yours.

It's tough not being able to hear the noise it's making. Luckily I can draw parallels to my own experiences with GC's. Mine has 'Select-Trac', which like your 'Command-Trac', enables us to shift on the fly to 4WD. Meaning, we don't have to stop, get out, lock the hubs, get back in then shift to 4WD. Also like yours, my front end was making some noise.

What was up with mine: The 'Select-Trac' on my G.C. is a lever type switch on the center console. When I switch from 2WD to 4WD it routes a vacuum line to an actuator which engages the transfer case. The moving parts are all near the T-Case. While in 4WD, going any faster than a crawl I'd hear a mild grinding/whirring sound. It increased with speed, all but disappeared as I decelerated and made me crazy.

What it turned out to be was a Vacuum leak. The 'bellows' (for lack of a better description) type actuator was only partially engaging the the 4WD. Enough to lock the drive train, not enough to fully mesh the gears resulting in all sorts of worrisome noises. I found and fixed the leak, adjusted the range on the mode rod and that was it.

You're thinking, 'That's special'.

Well here's the parallel.
Command-Trac is also vacuum actuated. The difference is it engages your hubs from the the front axle by means of a 'shift fork'. The technical name is the 'Command-Trac Axle Shift Motor'.
When applied, the vacuum actuator moves the fork one way or the other, engaging or disengaging the hubs.

From your excellent diagnosis, it sounds like 4WD isn't fully disengaging.
You were correct about the front drive shaft. It should not be spinning while in 2WD.

Qualifiers: Is the grinding sound different at low speeds? While making sharp turns?

Have another look with these new facts in mind. Check vacuum lines, lubricant in the axle.

If you get me your engine size, tranny type, etc. I can probably scare up some vacuum diagrams (on the off chance you need them).

I hope this opens new doors for you.
