The reverse on my 1989 corvette just stopped working, when I shift into reverse it rolls forward and when I shift into drive it does nothing for a second and then gives a very sudden lurch forward. When I give it gas the engine screeches as if I am flooring it and puts out about 1/20 the power it should be. I was driving home and it all of a sudden lost all it's power when I was accelerating so i pulled over and found that my engine was 270*F (normally hit 230-240 on a very hot day) and my engine was screeching and reverse had died. Any ideas?

It sounds like you may have lost your water pump or your thermostate may have gone bad too. Regardless if your going to change your water pump your going to have to change the thermosate too.
As for the transmission it could be your spider gears , there weak in the 700R4 and other you lose your reverse first with had lurchs when put in to drive. Sorry for the bad news, good luck

2008 Hyundai Accent automatic transmission, goes into reverse but no forward driving gears

This could be due to a variety of reasons such as a faulty shift solenoid, internal mechanical failure with the transmission, or an issue with the transmission fluid.

It's possible that the car's transmission was damaged when it was stuck in the snow drift. The slight pause shifting from reverse to drive that you mentioned earlier could also be an indication of a transmission problem. I would recommend taking your car to a qualified mechanic to diagnose and fix the issue. You might get lucky-- but without a visual inspection, you may just hear the intimidating prognosis of a transmission problem.

In the meantime, you can try holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the transmission engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot. This will eliminate the forward roll problem .

Why would a vehicle in reverse move forward

The question is a little vague but I think I know what your referring to. All modern automatic transmissions have torque converters. This is the device that connects the engine to the transmission. All vehicle manufacturers like the trans to be nice and smooth shifting. That's great but it does come with some minor drawbacks. If you are facing slightly down hill and you put your car in reverse but do not step on the gas slightly I can guarantee that you will indeed roll forward. You can eliminate that issue by holding your left foot on the brake while you shift into reverse. Then, as soon as you feel the trans engage, gently depress the gas pedal with your right foot and it will eliminate that forward roll problem.

My 1995 2500 chevy trans shifts good from forward to reverse but don't shift to any higher forward gears sat for a couple months before that no issues this truck has the 6.5 turbo

Thats not good !
I suggest that the truck be started and warmed up a while.
Then try to drive it around a bit in the yard or where ever.
If that doesnt work out the suspected clog, then I would roll under the truck and look to see if something hasn't eatten away at the wire harness for the trans.

Reverse died, engine HOT, drive lurches

I would have to say that your transmission failed. The Tranmission was trying to lock up and the engine was being forced to labor extra hard and that is what more than likely created the extra heat.

1994 Ford Ranger won't shift into drive

In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.
