Horn cutts out when pressed., sometime works other times does not. After removing the airbag insert and reinstalling it AND the clockspring being replaced the horn sound on its own! So to shut it off I had to bypass the horm and install a momentatry on button to engage the horn. But doing that the horn stops sounding but stil intermittantly cutts out when the button is pushed. Does this sound like a steering wheel/colume problem or maybe a bad connection in a wire leading to the horn? where is the horn by the way?

well thanks! steyr1. but how do I know it is shorted out before buying it though?

Does it sound like a clok spring to you?

  • drjmolinairo Apr 06, 2009

or I guess I could just put my finger in the socket and hit the horn. LOL!

Your horn maybe have a short circuit on it.
replace the horn and this problem must resolved. horn is alocated rear grille, and before radiator.

try it with another horn taken from your friends . dont bay imediatly new one. if you dont have a friend to request from it go in the car cemetery and take one used. this too can save you money.

or if you dont want this too prove with a bulb light take one 40-50 w and put in horn contact lats some one to clackson and you can see if the light is coming on with the horn pushed ritm.

2012 Hyundai Elantra, horn and cruise control not working from steering wheel, but the radio controls are working (radio controls on left side, cruise control on right). Could it be the clockspring?

It could be, but you need to do some trouble shooting to determine the issue. Is there power to the switches? is there power to the clock spring? Is there continuity through the clock spring? Determining where the issue is will save $$.

Horn won't stop

if you unplug the clock spring on the back side and the horn will stop then remove the air bag and check the switches and wires inside the steering wheel

I want to replace the right hand speed control for the cruise control on my 2008 Chrysler Aspen - any ideas? Anyone!

REPLACING CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH

1.
Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable from battery.

2. Remove airbag module (See AIRBAG REMOVAL below).

3. Remove speed control switch mounting screw and remove switch from steering wheel.

4. Reverse procedure to install.
AIRBAG REMOVAL
1. Disconnect and isolate negative battery cable from battery.

2. From the underside of the steering wheel, remove the two screws that secure the driver airbag to the steering wheel armature.
CAUTION: The horn switch and the clockspring pigtails connected to the back of the airbag module are fragile. Do not pull on these wires to disengage them. These must be handled carefully to prevent damage to the horn switch and/or the clockspring assembly.
3. Pull the driver airbag away from the steering wheel enough to access the three electrical connections on the back of the airbag housing.

4. Disconnect the steering wheel wire harness connector for the horn switch from the horn switch feed pigtail wire connector, which is located on the back of the driver airbag housing.

5. The clockspring driver airbag pigtail wire connectors are secured by integral latches to the airbag inflator connector receptacles, which are located on the back of the driver airbag housing. Depress the latches on each side of the connector insulator and pull the insulators straight out from the airbag inflator to disconnect them from the receptacles.

6. Remove the driver airbag from the steering wheel.

7. Reverse procedure to install.

1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager airbag light keeps coming on and when put on computer scaner the code came up "Driver quid open" what does this mean?

I am not sure whether the computer scanner you used was for the correct make and model Voyager. Woulod be helpful if you provide some details on what scanner you are using and where did you connect it.

The airbag light coming on has a few reasons.

One is that the airbag computer is failing certain tests and is giving a warning.
The other possibility is that the clockspring inside the steering column is faulty. some model were recalled in early 2000 for clockspring replacement under the component life time warranty.

Next time the light comes on you try to press the horn and check if it works. If not it is definitely clockspring. Otherwise the airbag circuit is faulty. In either case a visit to a service dealer is required.

2002 Dodge Neon, suddenly the horn was working. Went to press on it and got nothing. Then slammed my fist into it a couple times and it worked. Woke up this morning to the horn blaring. What would cause it...

It is probably trying to pay you back for slamming your fist into it....You have to be nice to cars sometimes to get them to cooperate...You know, pet them on the end of the hood and tell them what good cars they are? :)

Anyway, your problem is most likely being caused by a bad clockspring assembly in the steering column. This can also cause your airbag warning lamp to come on. If the airbag light is on, this is almost guaranteed to be the problem. A cracked circuit strip inside a clockspring assembly can expand and contract with temperature changes and cause things to short out. If the clockspring is not the problem then the airbagassembly could be shorting internally. I wouldn't recommend beating it with your fist anymore unless you want the airbag to deploy in your face.

99 Dodge Caravan-Horn stopped working and airbag light came on

I have the same problem and it's not the rely or fuse... that would be too easy.

2000 Dodge Caravan ABS Light Question: 2000 Dodge Caravan. The other day my light for my air bag came on, but I noticed when it came on my cruise control stopped working and my horn doesn't work when I push on it. However the horn does work when you set off the alarm. Is it a fuse that's gone bad and if so which one is it.
Thanks for all your help.Christy
Answer: There is a device inside the steering wheel called a Clockspring. Basically it looks like the main spring of a watch. It's purpose is to insure perfect electrical contact with the airbag module in the steering wheel. Wiring for the horn and cruise control also go through the Clockspring. When the Clockspring goes bad you lose horn, cruise control and the airbag light comes on.
On 10/5/2004 a Motor Vehicle Recall, number 04V480000 was issued on this vehicle for this problem. From the recall bulletin:
Summary:
ON CERTAIN MINIVANS, THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG MAY BECOME DISABLED DUE TO A FAILURE OF THE CLOCKSPRING, WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE HUB OF THE STEERING WHEEL.
Consequence:
THIS CONDITION WILL MANIFEST ITSELF THROUGH ILLUMINATION OF THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP, AND COULD EVENTUALLY RESULT IN A DRIVER'S AIR BAG OPEN CIRCUIT, IF THE PART IS NOT REPLACED IN A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY ON ALL COVERED VEHICLES WITH 70,000 MILES OR LESS. FOR THOSE VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 70,000 MILES, DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL OFFER AN EXTENDED LIFETIME WARRANTY UNDER WHICH IT WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING AT NO CHARGE IF IT FAILS. DAIMLERCHRYSLER WILL ALSO REIMBURSE OWNERS WHO HAVE PAID TO HAVE THE CLOCKSPRING REPLACED ON THEIR VEHICLES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 12, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
So at this point you should call your Dodge Dealer and make an appointment to have the recall performed on your vehicle.

Horn stopped working

HORN CIRCUIT RUNS THROUGH AIRBAG "CLOCKSPRING". THIS CLOCKSPRING IS A ROTATING DEVICE THAT HAS A SPIRAL CABLE INSIDE THAT FLEXES AS YOU TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. THE PROBLEM AFFECTS THE CRUISE CONTROL SOMETIMES AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT MAY STAY ON ALSO. ONE OR MORE FUNCTIONS MAY BE AFFECTED OR JUST A SINGLE CIRCUIT(HORN). THE PROBLEM AREA WILL BE FROM THE STEERING WHEEL DOWN(MOST LIKELY THE CLOCKSPRING) HAVE YOUR DEALERSHIP RUN THE VIN NUMBER THROUGH THEIR SYSTEM AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY RECALLS CONCERNING THIS. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU!!

Airbag light flashing

As long as the light is on the airbag system is disabled.

I would suspect that your clockspring behind the steering wheel is going bad. I would have someone with a scan tool that is able to retrieve trouble codes from the airbag system check it for codes to verify this. If so then steering wheel and steering column trim would have to be removed to access the clockspring to replace it.

1997 Dodge Caravan Horn and Airbag light

It's the " clock spring " . Dodge has a lifetime recall / replacement on this part. Somehow it controls the air bag and is tied into the horn and cruise control .
