87 RX7 - smoking exhast for several miles then stops

I have a 87 RX7 - non-turbo - smokes terrible for a mile or two and then stops. Doesn't seem to be affect the power. Problems flooding when I start the engine - unsure if the two items are related

  • miketbuck Apr 15, 2009

Took a wire from the Fuel pump and installed a toggle switch to turn it off. I turn off the fuel pump and let the car stall to turn it off. Turn it back on just as I'm turning on the car. Have not had any problems starting the car and it only smokes for a second when I tune the car on. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Well, when you turn off the rotary it leaves oil and gas.so when you start it up, it burns off the oil you left causeing blueish smoke. same problem with flooding, when you drive short distance , warmup incorrectly or if use synthetic oil.to fix the cause of flooding(i have the same vehicle and problems)let it warm up for at least 15 min.there is also a fuel pump wire next to the fuse box located above the brake pedal.then you tap a switch from the fuel pump to your interior.the reoson being is so whenever you come to a stop to park flip the swith.that allows the rotar to burn the fuel left in the pump witch will make your rx7 to stutter out and die.when you start it back up ,flip the swicth back on and it will take an extra second for it to crank over.1 more thing, check your oil every 2-3 fills on gas and change oil every 2000 miles.also redline it at least one a week. i hope i just solved your problem because i love my 87 non turbo and know how you feel.if you want to look at cheap aftermarket parts for rx7 then go to srmotorsports.com/rx7guru.com is a guy that test parts to tell people wats good and cheap for rx7s.i would recomend roll cage and 5 point harness-seats.good luck with your rx7 bro

White smoke out exhast/ then just stops smoking

This could just be hot exhaust on a cold morning all the way to bad piston rings letting by exhaust gases until they warm and expand. How many miles are on your car? Has it over heated?

3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel Mercedes. 115,000 miles. When it is left on tickover for 10 to 15 mins starts to smoke white/grey smoke from exhausts. After a few minutes of normal driving the smoke stops.

Possible cause is several drops of oil are leaking past the valve guide seals when the vehicle just sits. When it is started the oil begins to burn off in the cylinders and after awhile the smoke disappears. I have always recommended cha going the oil to a synthetic and adding an oil additive called Restore. It comes in a cylindrical can in 4, 6 or 8 cylinder size. Put 1 can in with the new oil. Drive the vehicle on the highway for 45 - 60 minutes. I recommend putting on a few hundred Mrs. The additive restores the valve seals preventing the oil from dripping into the cylinders. Have used it on my customers vehicles for 20 years. Saved them a lot of money from replacing the seals.

White smoke Audi 2.0 non turbo is this connected to excessive oil consumption is a 60k mile engine A4 reg 2001.

White smoke is usually coolant burning, but you say no loss of coolant, so must be oil burning. PCV is possible fault, especially since you say smoke is intermittent. Part itself should be cheap, less than $20. One your car I believe it is located in a pipe running from intake to valve cover.

1993 mazda rx7 blowing blue smoke on start up

Afraid that is integral engine. The oil control ring o-rings are failing or the oil control rings are worn out.

BLUE SMOKE FROM AUDI RS6 ON DE ACCELERATION AND START UP THINK OIL STEM SEALS ARE LETTING OIL THROUGH. CAR RUNS FINE I THINK, AND EXCESSIVE BUILD UP OF OIL IN DRIVER SIDE TURBO PIPE, 62000 MILES WITH A...

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

Jeep cherokee 2.8 CRD smoking. Replaced the injectors without any improvment. The garage told me that the smoke will stop after I have driven it for a couple of handred miles. Is this true.

from what you say, they said," it was the injectors that were faulty",hence changeing them, you could have tried a fuel additive/injector cleaner which could have had the same effect.....try a can to 5 gallons of fuel and if no improvement within 100 miles, give them HELL.smoke from a turbo engine could be dirty fuel/compression low/air leak from the turbo pipes/lazy turbo, etc but this engine is not exaclty the cleanest on emmisions.so expect a SMALL amount of smoke when cold or when accelerating HARD.

02 highlander 4cyl I park it for 2 days when I go to start it smoke blows out the tail pipe after 30 sec or so no more smoke what is the problem ?

Depending on the color of the smoke.....

Blue smoke = Burnt oil (Valve steam oilseals)
To fix you need them replaced can be done without removing the head.

Black smoke = Too much fuel (Running rich)
Tune-up replace air filter.

If its a turbo it could be the seals in the turbo but i doubt it as it stops smoking.
Hope this helps , Please rate me as feedback does help.

Hi, I have a 1996 Volvo wagon 850 turbo. I just bought it and when you hold the rpm's at 3 and a half it was blowing out smoke after about 600 miles it stoped smelling like burning oil and doesn't blow out any smoke. But I use a court of oil in about every 150 miles. What could this be?
Thank's Jodie

Chain smoker

Turbo oil seal is probably bad. This lets oil leak into the air intake from the turbo bearing. If smoke goes away during hard acceration, then this is probably your problem. Turbo replacement or rebuild is the fix for this.

White smoke from exhaust

White smoke from exhaust = water into the cylinders, when this happens it usually means head gasket gone or starting to go.
Check the water level, and take the car to the garage for a check up , if it is the head gasket, as I think, you risk to blow the engine at any time.
