Hi,
I have some trouble with my Huyndai Santa Fe (2002). We brought it to the dealer because ist started to use oil like crazy and it was smoking big time. When the engine was cold it was smoking like a locomotive.
and as soon as the engine was warmed up, it did not smoke at all anymore. So the dealer charged us 2000$ (Canadian)....
They changed (referering to the oilleak) PCV valve, the E.G.R valve was leaking, the upper oil pan was resealed. Now the car does not use at much oil anymore, (just got it one week back) but it still produces too much smoke in the morning.
So when I start in the morning then the smoke starts and it is not bad but as soon as I rev up the car then there is suddenly way more (white smoke, not black smoke) smoke and it dissapears pretty quickly. (wtihin 5 minutes)
The mechanic said afterwards that it is possible that a crank seal is leaking but could not confirm, although he thought it was minor at this point, we had to monitor this. He insured me that the car could easily run another 3 to 5 years.
I am really worried about this and I really need my car and I drive about 120 kilometers a day (highway, 80 miles).
The car always has been maintained very well and it has only 150000 kilometers on it (100000 miles).
Seriously, what can this be and why did the mechanics not notice this before? What can it be that he did not see or find?
I am totally not technical and I really would hate if I am forced to buy another car. (Car dealers are sinking in Canada too)
Any advice is welcome.
If its a petrol motor then they will blow a little white smoke/steam on startup until the exhaust heats up. The engines computer knows that its cold so richens the petrol/air mixture to warm it up faster . You should let it warm a little before driving off or if you can't then don't rev it hard til it starts to warm up. All the parts inside the engine need to get to optimal running temp to wear properly. Most engines wear more on startup then when they have been running for a long time. In regards to smoke blue is bad (oil) black is bad ( to much fuel) and white is usually on startup.

Hi,
I had to bring my car to the dealer again and it was a "valve stem seal" the pistons were good so I was very happy to hear that it is not such a big expense. I was told that they run the diagnostics program and the "valve stem seal" did not show up. They had to look underneath "something" (sorry I cannot remember what) to find out what it was. Anyway, it will cost me about 500 Dollars but I am not forced to buy another car yet. I wil get my car back in a couple of days and if I do not post anymore then the problem has been solved.
Thank you.
