I have what apprears to be an engine noise coming from within the oil pan region of a 4.8L votec, auto trans. Dealer has popped the oil pan and couldn't locate. Another mechanic said that the noise is most defined in the oil pan area, not fly wheel, torque converter or oild pan. It sounds as though something is slapping the side of a metal cover. Belts have been removed to rule out a belt or idler pully. I'm not a professional mechanic, but it just doen't seem to sound like a bearing, rod or piston thing. I first noticed the noise a couple of hours after the dealer changed the oil. Is the oil pump mechanical? Could that be it? Or, maybe a sensor that's broken loose? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've been out of work for the past few weeks and can't afford a huge bill doing exploratory work right now. Help, please....
Yes, it is a mechanical oil pump. Just for peace of mind, you could have the oil pressure checked. A mechanic shop could do it real easy-you remove the oil pressure sensor or sending unit from the engine block and hook up a "mechanical oil pressure gauge", then run the engine with gauge attached and check pressure against the specs for your model- it is a specified pressure at a specified engine rpm. I f oil pressure is within specs, I can't imagine anything else about the pump that could cause that noise. It is a compact unit with a couple of heavy internal gears.
If your mechanic didn't think it was a bearing or rod either, you should be safe there. He would know the sound of a rod bearing or mechanical problem like that, and if it is different from your sound. Beyond that and the oil pump, I just don't have any ideas.

Wow, sounds like a good one, my only suggestion would be, try changing or machining the brake rotor and double checking to make sure all the caliper hardware is torqued up tight. Possibly a tire? Try switching side to side.

Have you checked the u-joint yet? i had what sounds like a similar problem to yours and thats what took care of it for me...

This is a big sign that you might have a spun rod bearing if it's coming form your oil pan. Use a screwdriver and put the flat tip end on the oil pan and the plastic end near your ear like a stethascope and if you hear a knocking it's probaly a spun rod bearing or a bent or warped wrist pin on the bottom of your piston. So some good advice is to not run it anymore until you get it a mechanic to fix it. If you want to do it yourself you have a job ahead of you but refer to an Haynes Auto Repair Manual and you will have fun doing a job by yourself. I hoped this help!

I had a simular problem. I had bad plug/coil wires. The foil insulation from the engine cover would draw the voltage from the wires.
