Shifting Gears Sometimes when I turn on my car and try to shift out of Park, it will not let me shift, at all. The shift button is locked. I relieve this problem, but using the "Shift Release" area - but I have another shift problem. I also am having the problem with the shifting and the gear lights not illuminating. I will try to shift from park to reverse, it totally skips reverse, clunks into neutral. I have noticed if i turn car off, then on again, it relieves the problem, but this may only be temporary. Thanks for any help!

2000 jeep Cherokee key will not turn or come out, is there a lock out switch when in park?

Here's something to consider..... Sometimes, when one parks against a curb, there is a tendency for the ignition switch and the gear shift to kind of get in a bind. Sometimes, forcing the steering wheel to turn a bit, one way or the other, will relieve the pressure of things so that the gear shift or the ignition switch will function properly... OR, you might try putting the gear shift in Neutral... and then returning it to Park... Just some thoughts...

Sounds like your shifter linkage is the problem. Do you park on a flat surface or on an incline? If you park on an incline, try parking on a flat surface. Sometimes shift linkage is cable driven, sometimes they are all steel bar linkages. As far as being sluggish while driving, I would try shifting manually 1st to 2nd, to drive. Shift the gears at the normal RPM's and see if it shifts better. The linkage may be catching in between gears. The only other possibility is that the transmission is vacumn assisted, and has a leak in the vacume lines. While car is running, listen for air hissing, if you hear it, pin point it, also listen under the car for the same.I don't think this is the case, but worth the troubleshoot. If this was the case, the light on the indicator sould not be slow to react , but I may be wrong there

Stuck in park

If there is pressure on the front wheels, it may prevent you from turning the key to get it out of park. Try turning the steering wheel to relieve pressure and try shifting out of park.

Vechile will not shift into park or reverse

The first thing to check is the linkage. Sometimes the linkage will slip, Block the wheels on the car (both front and rear) to prevent rolling. Locate the shift linkage on your transmission, and loosen the nut. You should be able to move the shift lever through all the gears, including "P" and "R". Place the transmission shift lever in "Park" (on the transmission) then move the shift lever (inside the car) in the "P" position and tighten the nut (not a bad idea to use a new locking nut here) You should now be able to shift through all gears. If this does not work, you have a more serious problem that may include a worn or broken belt or broken parking pawl inside the transmission.
