SOURCE: No power accelerating or going up a hill
HAVE SOMEONE CK THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND CATALYTIC CONVERTER MAKE SURE EXHAUST IS CLEAR
SOURCE: Losing power/acceleration on hills
Change or clean the EGR valve and install a new catalytic converter.
This should take care of the problem.
SOURCE: 2002 jetta TDI- I try to accelerate up a hill and no power
Count the shifts. It sounds like you are going into overdrive and staying there. Overdrive is too long legged to pull most hills unless you are really flying.. good luck

Just an update, [again any advice is greatly appreciated and i AM monitering this thread] The first problem occured again today and is happening more frequently but this time was coupled with the second problem. When i got to the top of a hill and reached that ceiling rev of around 4k, i let the car roll down and push against that resistance for a little while. Eventually the car filled with a smell sort of like oil or some form of essential liquid. It made me think it could be that my oil viscosity is too thick, im using 2Ow-5O from caltex. If anybody has any idea, please feel free to answer.
im having a look through the engine workshop manual, and it also seems likely that the air intake temperature sensor might be faulty.
the universal traits of what im seeing is that it seems to be governed by temperature as well as some form of resistance, hope that helps.
did some more testing today and i believe the more technical term is that it 'hesitates' while warming up and loses top end power and revs when its hot, it wont move past a certain level of revs.
