Question about 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
My power steering is leaking. Ordered the new P/S from the dealer. Before I will replace it, the new P/S looks different on the ends. It has the nut on both ends reversed, (the oen that goes into the resevoir is now at the other end to go into the fan, and vice versa, compared to the old P/S. Do you know if this change in the P/S is done to correct the common leaking problem, or the nuts on both ends are just simply asssembled wrong?
Or they gave you the wrong line. There may have been a design change though. Ask the dealer

Parts are not cheap. I'm not sure how hard it is to get to your lines but line wrench/crows foot are probably needed. They are like a boxend wrench with cutout to go over line.

is the radiator fan coming on and staying on, or not coming on at all?? i was having the same problem, and it turned out to be a fan relay switch which was pretty easy to replace. around 40 bucks, and maybe 30-45 mins.

I see this is a two part question...
In replacing the alternator, there is no reason at all to be messing with the pulley on the power steering. That pulley is pressed on and though you could remove it with a puller it is far more difficult to re-install without the proper tools. (it is not hammered on). Power steering pulleys don't just fall off. They are so tightly pressed onto the shaft that they don't even require a retaining bolt to hold them on.
Without the benefit of being able to examine it myself, I'd have to guess that either you originally had a mis-match of pulley to pulley shaft and the pulley was sliding on the shaft (so remote a concept that you may be hit by a meteorite if you buy that) Or someone removed it for an unknown reason and did not properly re-install it.
